Ever since we left Yuma heading east my GPS has been so inaccurate with the speed limits in Texas. Now I'm in New Orleans LA and it's all over the place. With the multiple layer of HI ways in the city it's so far off to be unsafe. For those that have one, what is the best setting for city driving, car or RV (street view, Auto View City view). Perhaps I'm not using it right. I can't believe the places in the city it took me, good thing we were in the car. The roads and traffic in NO is awful too. So much construction and narrow roads. I may replace this one. Any recommendations for a replacement. I did a recent update too.

Sounds typical for every GPS I have owned.

We have had both the Rand McNally RVND7730LM and the Garmin 2797LMT and my opinion is the Garmin is a far superior unit from the standpoint of quality and accuracy. Don't get me wrong the Garmin still has its shortcomings as sometimes the directions are not 100% correct but overall I believe it is the better of the two.

We have had very good luck with the Rand McNally 7715.OP:Have you tried resetting the unit?

Some days, my phone and/or tablet is spot on. Other days, I am traveling in the woods. Sometimes a reset helps, but I just think it is bad signals.

Check your settings. Ours, when set for "shortest distance", has taken us through alleys and what we thought were parking lots. When in our MH we never rely solely on the GPSes (we run two and they often disagree). Mapquest, GoogleEarth and paper maps can be your friend.

I COMPLETELY agree with you. G-half, however, cannot be convinced....no matter how many times we're routed to roads that are actually creek beds. :)

Btw, we're also encountered the speed limit issue. When incorrect, it has always showed a lower speed limit than is actually posted, so we figured the speed limit had been changed.

There have been a few instances of "variable speed limit" zones (where the speed limit is posted via a lighted sign than can change). There the GPS always showed a speed limit of 35.

Yes, we have done the updates when available.

Was visiting with some folks just this weekend and they stated that their Onstar was way off on directions to a place they wanted to go. Oh well.

Illinois changed their speed limit last year to 70 (from 65). I did updates to my Rand a couple months ago thinking that would include the Illinois speed limit change. It didn't.

In almost 3 years my Rand has only seriously routed me dangerously wrong once while towing. In the state of Washington it had me take an exit heading to a campground and after the third or fourth turn we came to a 12' RR overpass.

Like others have said, the Rand or any other GPS are not perfect.

That's probably the result of incorrect maps rather than a problem with the GPS itself. If it was showing incorrect vehicle speed that would be a problem with the GPS.

Assuming you have an iPad or smartphone, download CoPilot (I have the $10 paid version that speaks the names of the streets). Once downloaded to your device, it uses no data. Love it. Very accurate.

BTW, I also have the RM7720. IMHO, a total waste of my money.

Are you saying that it is showing the vehicle speed incorrectly? Or showing incorrect posted speeds for the roads you're on? When driving in New Orleans do you have it set for RV or Auto? That could make a big difference in how you're being routed. There are quite a few settings that could make a difference in the routing. Might be time to dig out the owner's manual. :)
