It really just amazes me how some people are so willing to give up their rights without even paying any mind to the long term implications. The thought that just because it's a right they don't want to exercise, or feel the need for, that somehow it will be "all ok" because it doesn't affect them. Newsflash people, every erosion of your rights affect you, even if you don't exercise those rights.
How outraged would you be if the government came down tomorrow and said that you are no longer free to speak out against government policies regarding anything? Or we will no longer allow the press to report on governmental activities? All of a sudden those of you who didn't give a rip about your right to keep and bear arms will be outraged. But, it won't matter, because you will have given away your ability to stand up to a tyrannical government. And for those of you who think "our government won't do that" better think twice about that. The world is full of examples of government crackdowns on their population, under dubious circumstances or justification.
NYCgrrl.. if you find the gun ownership stats frightening, you should find even more frightening, the high murder rate and gun violence rates in places like Chicago, that have a ban or oppressive restrictions on guns. But, I suspect those stats won't interest you, as they don't serve your agenda.

Agendas? We ALL have agendas so let's not be disingenuous. Your agenda is to rationalise why you feel firearms are necessary for your personal and daily protection. My agenda is to travel this country from stern to stem in peace comfortable with the award winning sharpshooting 'Nam era Army cook by my side who hasn't picked up a firearm since, LOL. Guns for hunting, contests..that I get. Guns to setup a paramilitary force superseding the military and LEOs? Nope, not interested. I pay enough in taxes for NYPD. And the millions in lawsuits when they have oops moments. And the mental anguish of knowing some mother/husband/wife/children has lost a loved one to an error.
Bear and wasp spray (learned something good from this thread), the ability to know my surroundings, has served me well to date and hopefully for all times until I die.
As for stats, goodness knows there are lots of them like the one that says you are more likely to die violently by the hand of a loved one than a stranger. No need for me to pass that knowledge on to MY loved ones;).
