- mowermechExplorerSo, you are saying that having the car loaded on a dolly with the wheels firmly strapped in place is the same as jacking it up so the wheels will steer freely?
Sorry, I still do not believe it!
The front wheels of a car can not help steer the dolly that they are firmly strapped to, whether the steering is unlocked or not. The tires of a non-steerable dolly will skid sideways when turning. Unlocking the steering of the car that is loaded on the dolly will not change that.
Again, I have watched the Acme video of their dolly in a 90 degree turn. The wheels of the car do not move!
Again I ask, exactly what damage to the car will occur if it is towed on an Acme dolly with the steering locked? - WILDEBILL308Explorer IIOk let me try to help you one more time. Go jack up your car so that both wheels are off the ground. Use all appropriate safety equipment. Now with the steering column unlocked move the tiers from left to right by moving the tire by hand. What happens? Does the STEERING WHEEL MOVE? Now lock the steering column and try to turn the tiers. What happens?
Bill - mowermechExplorerOh, I trust YOU that you have towed with an Acme dolly for over 10,000 miles.
I do NOT trust ACME when they say this:
"If your car uses a locking steering column, we recommend that you leave you keys in the accessory position to allow your wheels to turn freely."
That is a direct copy and paste from THEIR "Owners Manual" on their website.
They also say:
" IF YOU ARE TOWING A CAR WITH A LOCKING STEERING COLUMN LEAVE THE KEY SET TO ACCESSORY AND THE CAR WILL TOW AND TURN JUST FINE. "
The all caps are theirs, not mine.
So, when the car is on the dolly, and the straps are tightened so the wheels can not move, the car steering will help the dolly turn?
Sorry, no, I do not believe it. As I stated, I have watched the video of the dolly, with a car aboard, turning, and I don't see the car wheels moving at all.
What damage will occur if you tow on an ACME dolly with the steering locked? How can it damage anything when the front wheels are tied down tightly?
For those who do not know what is being discussed here, look at this:

See how those car wheels are tied down? They simply can not help steer that dolly! - WILDEBILL308Explorer III never tried to tow with the steering locked as this will damage your car. What's to understand? Re read my post I towed for over 10,000 miles using a Acme dolly. Just trust me on this.
Bill - mowermechExplorerOK, how well does it track with the car steering locked? How many miles did you tow it that way?
I'm not saying it won't track well, I'm saying I don't believe that the car wheels help the dolly steer once they are tightly strapped down. They simply can not move! - WILDEBILL308Explorer II

The toad need to yaw when the dolly turns.
This makes the turns smoother.
Do a search for your manufacturer and check the FAQ.
I know Acme specifies UNLOCKED only.
Yes, Acme says the wheels must be unlocked so the dolly will steer.
I don't believe it.
IMO, once the wheels are strapped tightly in place, they are not going to move, and they will not help the dolly steer.
I have watched their video of the dolly turning, and I still don't believe it. I simply can not see the wheels moving at any time during the turn.
I will spend the extra money and have a dolly that steers.
The American Tow Dolly is the best bang for the buck, IMO. If I ever buy a new dolly, that is what it will be.
Well you can believe it. I towed a Acme dolly over 10,000 miles. The car and dolly track just fine with the car steering unlocked.

That is not true with a dolly that has the pivoting pans or the wheels turn. I saw a new Prius that someone had towed without locking the steering and it had dented both sides of the car because it moved to far and the tow dolly fenders had made major dents in the side of the car.

That makes sense with the rotating plate on the dolly. Acme is fixed so I guess the wheel should be unlocked.
