The drive from Fresno CA to Port Angeles WA

Hi all y’all,

I’m going to be leaving Fresno CA on the 18th and heading to Port Angeles WA. As many here know, when I purchased my 1994 33’ Holiday Rambler it was a monument to deferred maintenance and neglect. Even though I’ve taken to the road with it, ever since I left Texas the rig’s been a work-in-progress. The route north I’ve planned is to take I-5 to Weed CA where I’ll pick up SH 97 to Klamath Falls. I plan to make a stopover in Klamath Falls and visit Crater Lake NP (driving my toad to Crater Lake and leaving the RV in Klamath Falls). From there I plan to cut back over to Eugene OR and I-5, via SH 58 just north of Chemult OR. Once I get back to I-5, I plan to drive it straight to Olympia WA where I’ll catch SH 101 to Port Angeles. I know with all the interstate driving this doesn’t seem very adventuresome, but all I can say is just driving this old rig of mine is an adventure. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not inherently unsafe and it runs well, but it never fails to come up with new challenges for me to deal with on these trips.

If anyone here has any personal information about this route that might potentially save me some problems please let me know.

Steve

Thing to remember. In Oregon you cannot pump your own fuel outside of a reservation. If a tribe has a gas station on their own land, they can and do offer self-serv pumps. Example: at Spirit Mountain Casino in Grand Ronde, OR you pump your own gas.

You can use the shoulder of the road on I-5 when going up hill in Oregon. No sales tax in Oregon. If pulling a trailer you can drive the same speed as the cars in Or and Wa. The TRUCK SPEED on I-5 in WA is 60. In the MH on I-5 in WA I set the cruise control to 62 and stay in the right lane.

I was disappointed of the air along I-5. Air to the west was clear and nice looking, air to the east was as smoggy as downtown LA. You can always bring along cans of Perri-Air. I don't always drive I-5, but when I do, I prefer to stay far west of I-5.

You cannot buy booz in Wa on Sunday and you have to go to a State store to buy the hard stuff. Incorrect. Thanks to a WA-based wholesale club spending millions of dollars to get the WA liquor laws changed one can now purchase hard liquor EVERYWHERE in WA.

I am not a drinker so it didn't bother me. The have more rest stops in WA and OR. They were clean and nice. I found food at the tourist traps is cheaper than expected so stop at Fat Smitty's at the intersection of 101 and 20 in Discovery Bay, WA for a Smitty Burger.

So enjoy your trip and don't let them know you are from California.

Port Angeles is about 30 miles west of where I am on Diamond Point in Sequim.

People in both Or and Wa have a snob attitude to people from Ca. They also have a sport of holding up traffic on two lane roads. I would be behind someone doing 40 to 45 in a 55 mile a hour highway, then when you get to a passing lane they would raise to end to the passing lane and show down. I had this done to me several times. In Wa and Or you will be coming down a steep grade in a 55 zone, as soon as you come around a sharp turn a in the turn you will find a new speed zone of 40 to 25 and a cop a few feet away. Oregon: Max Tow Speed 55
Washington: Truck speed limit or Max Tow Speed 65

All that has changed.. You can buy the hard stuff (beer too) any day of the week at just about any grocery store, Costco or any of a bunch of other places as well.
Pretty soon you'll be able to buy pot too :R
  • Interesting about the hostility mentioned towards Californians by both OR and WA residents. I lived in CA back in the mid-1970's and there was hostility even back then (I remember certain bumper stickers on Oregon cars). Hopefully, they won't hate Texans too much. I lived in Seattle for a year back in 1988 and am fairly familiar with the area, though I really only know the Olympic Peninsula from day trips with my family and taking the Black Ball Ferry to Victoria.

I'd toyed with the idea of taking SH 97 to I-84. I've driven I-84 in my car but it was nearly 20 years ago and I don't really remember much of it.

I'm ultimately planning on staying in Port Angeles for about two months and plan to do a lot of hiking and even some back-packing (a friend recommended the Hoh River trail to the Blue Glacier). Even though my bodies 66 years old, I just can't seem to wrap my head around or accept those numbers!

  • The drive you indicate looks fine to me. Once you turn off at Olympia, you'll still be on good hiway, not interstate. I would only add if you have time go onother 70 miles to Ozette, from Port Angeles, if you enjoy hiking, A 'boardwalk' type trail to the ocean, 3 miles each way, no hard climbs.you can do day hike or camp on the beach and return on oppsite route.

  • why not take the 97 all the way to the top of oregon, its a very scenic drive lots of small towns to stop in and have lunch, very flat drive and will save some gas, then take the 84 to I-5, along 84 you will find some wonderful campgrounds along the river
