Tips on acclimating the family to longer road trips

Hi folks,
Plans are in the works for us to switch to a MH and take once a year trips from the east coast to the west (and back hopefully!). We are accustomed to one day of travel and staying in one place for a week, then coming home - and will do a 500 mile day if needed. This is the 4 of us and a dog stuck in a crew cab pickup truck. I imagine in a MH it might be a little easier on us.
I think having RVed for over 10 years we have one or two things figured out but I'd like your tips from those more experienced. Ideally I'd like to take our time but limited vacation from work means sometimes we'll just have to buckle down and make time. I'm not going to make the whole trip like that (I'm not that crazy! We will not be moving all of the time) but there will have to be some days like that. I'm interested in your tricks to make that pass easier for DW, DD and DS.
DW plans to help with the driving on the MH so that will be a much needed help and break for me, considering now I do all of the driving with our setup. She is much more comfortable with the idea of driving a MH. That right there I think would help (at least us) to get through a long day or two.
Kids are 5 and 8, and we are planning to use next year for a run or two where we drive for two days instead of one, to see how we do. Then the year after plan on something big for as many years as we can until the kids are out of the house (can't even imagine that!)

thanks!

  • Nobody mentioned it so I'll throw it up there....travel at night. I've done it on a few occasions while traveling with family. You can put on some significant miles at night when there is lesser traffic and the family is sleeping. At daybreak, find a relaxing spot for the family and get some ZZZ's.
  • Motor homes have tables to color at etc, fridges and bathrooms, that can be used while driving. Those things are nice. And all the toys, blankets, the rest of kid stuff are with you, not back in the trailer

Stay at places with pools and playgrounds, Stop for lunch along they way, and too sightsee a bit. Books electronics are nice.

Make a reservation for where you are going to be for the next night. KOA's are great for that and have an easy to use website. Nothing harder on a kid, then finding out where you thought you were going to stay is full and you end up driving hours more. ( we usually figure out at night where we want to go and what we want to see for the next day, and how far we want to drive, then log on and make a reservation, for that next koa)

And again the promise of a pool and a playground at the end of the day really gives the kiddo's something to look forward too.

And the dog will love the couch, as he watches the miles go by, barking at cows and horses.

Only way to travel with kids in my humble opinion
  • Personally I see no advantage. Probably will cost you a lot of money to do the trade. Kids need to be seat belted while traveling so there is no advantage there. Stick a computer game in their hands and they will stay occupied.

Most people that I know that went from a 5er to a MH went back to a 5er.

As far as driving your truck will be more stable than the MH unless you buy a high end class A.
