I know some of you like public campgrounds but I find them to be annoying. You get weird power plays, crazy rule enforcements, and in this case arbitrary decisions. Case in point... we are staying at a county cg with full hookups in the upper plains. Forecast for tonight and tomorrow has the coldest lows into the mid thirties (no freeze warnings at all). Well, we get a taped note on our door saying that tonight and tomorrow night all water would be shut off due to freezing. When I approached the staff to get clarification on their reasoning I was essentially told "our decision is final and you must comply". Even showing them the nws forecast did not cut it and for even asking why they were ready to kick us out (mind you I was very polite and simply asked for the reasoning, the decision makers name, and mailing address). When I took them up on their offer to kick us out they back tracked when they realized they could not refund our monies and had no justifiable reason for their actions. This is our first public park in a long while and will most likely be our last for another long while.

Turning water off in evenings is common in colder regions. Helps to minimize water line damage which is very costly and time consuming.They let you know before hand..that means fill your fresh water tank before water is turned off.So for that you get all in a tissy :H

I agree with the CG on this. Weather forecasts are not always right. They felt it was too close to take the chance. You did have the option to leave if you didn't like their decision. When you say public CG, do you mean a privately owned or a government ran? To me all CG are public. It doesn't matter who owns it, the decision is made, like it or leave it, better safe than sorry.

Simply asked why, showed them the forecast, was told it was not their decision, I asked whose it was and how to contact them, and they got in the "tissy". Last I checked water does not freeze until 32f and the forecast low stays a few degrees above that; I guess logic and facts get me "tissied".

Public = Government; I imagine private parks would strongly disagree with you assuming they are public.To clarify I did not fault their decision but wanted clarity on the why and, since they were just the "enforcers", the who to contact. This thread is just a note that there are some of us that prefer private parks over public.

Side note... when they were trying to figure out how to refund my money I called the nearby koa. Explained the situation and they chuckled said this happens every year and, their words not mine, "the county park always jumps the gun".

The park doesn't turn off the water and the lines in the OP's trailer freezes and bursts and I wonder who they are going to blame first? Certainly not themselves...

I support the park in taking the precaution...it's only for a night and did you have plans to stay up all night and use the water...or sleep?

I agree. making a mountain out of a mole hill. :)

asking the staff for the 'name, rank, serial number and address' of who the PIA was that made the decision to cover their butts and save money damage actually put you in the PIA category.

sure a bit annoying, but it is just water shut off for the night and your tanks can easily cover your use. not even worth more effort and time you put into it that I can see.

Had I seen the note would have filled the FW tank, and been done with it.
You state county park, likely don't have a lot of funds for repairs and need to be more careful.

No water doesn't freeze until, and it really needs to get down to about 30 to freeze an exposed faucet overnight. They are just erring on the side of caution.
Maybe the decision is based on local knowledge that the area of the campground sits lower and gets colder than the surrounding areas.

absolutely. I am sure that the park management has had more experience as to temperature variations/swings in that area and is acting proactively. and they gave plenty of notice so folks could fill their water tank. If the campers had any sense they would disconnect and drain the hose themselves and not have to be told to do so. nothing is funnier than seeing a bunch of people trying to thaw out their hose in the morning after a cold snap.

Don't know where upper plains is but we were at 20 degrees last night. I removed my pump and blew out my irrigation lines.

Fill your fresh water tank. Disconnect from the campground water for the night and blow out the hose to keep the water from freezing in it. Most of the places campground water and sewer lines are not that far underground. It is October and you did get a note of warning.

Why didn't you simply insure that your tanks were full before night fall?
