Winterizing ?

This is our first trailer with a black tank flush. How do you winterize it? I use my pump with a hose into the jug of anti freeze to winterize the rest of the camper, but theres no way to winterize the black flush by using the pump.
  • On my rig the black tank flush has a vacuum breaker that is mounted higher than all the sinks and the toilet. Best to blow air through the line and then get a small hand pump and pump A/F through the flush line. I would think less than 2 cups would do it.
  • I just blow air through it even though I use the pink stuff for the other plumbing.
  • The OP is not talking about the black tank itself. It is the water line that sprays water into the black tank to flush it out after it is emptied.
  • The way I have been doing it for the past ten years which works fine for us here in the NC mountains where many days and night are zero or below:

Empty the tank completely and pour in the proper amount of waste chemicals. Then pump pink stuff through all the lines, including the toilet. Flush the toilet once or twice as you do it to get a bit of pink stuff into the tank.
The area of the tank is so large, that even if the liquid freezes, there is so much room for the expansion that nothing will get hurt.

  • Do you have an outside shower? If so, connect a short hose from the outside shower to the black tank flush. The shower needs to be winterized also.
  • I'd just blow the flush valve out with an air compressor and call it done, or if you can pump a few ounces of RV antifreeze into that valve, it will not hurt anything.

If in NY, I'd winterize everything else "wet" with the pink stuff. Make sure to get the RV antifreeze without ethanol because ethanol is hard on the O-rings and seals.
  • I just dump a gallon or two of antifreeze into the tank.
  • Either blow it out with air or camping world and most rv stores have pumps to add anti-freeze.
