As others have pointed out, I don't recall the last time I saw a pump island that wasn't covered with a canopy. In other words you would be out of the rain. - badsixExplorer

You totally miss the point. The prices in OR are higher than they COULD be because of the cost of the attendant. You like paying $0.07/gallon more because you have an attendant?

I was thinking in the beginning that all the crazy facebook posts by OR citizens complaining about having to fill up themselves were just aberrations. I think I am changing my mind.
Do you like paying .30 more?

I'm not any fan of the no self serve, but I wonder how much prices would change if any with self serve. In my travels in oregon and other states I've very often seen stations side by side or within blocks of each other with full islands and a price difference of $0.30/gallon or more for regular. Seems like enough people for one reason or another will gladly pay an extra $.30/gallon for the same gas. So lower expenses wouldn't necessarily lower prices.
Also, comparing the number of pump jockeys vs. help in oregon and elsewhere, the difference isn't all that much. places with only self serve and a small station seem to still have 2 or 3 people on staff to handle inside purchases and watch for drive aways. the same size station in oregon has roughly the same number of staff.
maybe one more.
What I've seen is that there usually 1 pump jockey for each 4 to 6 pumps, and in bigger stations 1 jockey for every 6-8 pumps. and I seldom wait for more than 30 seconds before they are at the car ready to fill even with cars at every pump.
and with pump jockeys, oregon has virtually no loss due to drive offs, and on drive off could easily be $60 or more out of the gross.
But in the end it's a fruitless discussion since in oregon two things will likely never happen.
1) allowing unrestricted self serve of a class one flamable liquid (gas)
2) a state sales tax. - babockExplorer

Just how cheap is it? GasBuddy heat map
OK cheap by Taxifornia standards maybe, not very cheap compared to the rest of the country
Oregons never been cheaper than the rest of the country. And neither has pump your own WA or CA. It's a west coast thing.
just filled up yesterday here in Oregon 2.76 a gal. that's 2.76 a gal. includes tax labor and everything. and the pump jockey pumped it with a smile as he cleaned my window and gave my dog a treat. it just can't get much better than that.
Jay D. - GordonThreeExplorerWhen they had full service in my town, it was an extra charge per gallon plus tip
I'm not enough of a snowflake to be offended having to pump my own gas, rain, snow or shine. Can't ever remember hosing myself or my vehicle down with gasoline either. - goducks10Explorer

You can laugh all you want while pumping your own gas at .40 more per gal.
I just marvel at the ignorance of some people.
Try using Gas Buddy. Pick your cities. I picked my city in Oregon and randomly picked Sacramento. 2.95 vs 3.35
I pay $2.89 in Los Angeles. I am sure it would be more if they had an attendant pumping it for me.
