1993 Brave Brake Light

I just purchased a used 1993 Brave and now the Brake light comes on the dash. Should I just add some brake fluid and see how it goes or take it directly to a garage?

Looking for the master cylinder to add brake fluid....

  • Appreciate the feedback. Fortunate for me when the mechanic inspected the system he showed me that a previous owner sunk a great deal of money in brakes calipers and such. I guess the master cylinder was the last old piece to fail. The difference in braking now is awesome. All squishiness is gone. Hallelujah!!!
  • Hi psalm10720.
Glad you found the problem and I assume you are replacing the master cylinder.
I hate to help you spend more money but if the master cylinder is original, most of the remaining brake system may also be original.
If it were me I would do a full hydraulic overhaul.
Master cylinder, calipers, wheel cylinders, rubber hoses and fresh pads/shoes.
Having iffy brakes is the last thing you want on 7 tons of rolling thunder.
  • In my case it was a leaky master cylinder. Looked like it was original equipment.
  • What dougrainer said is spot on. But it probably is a Chevy P30 chassis. Easiest is to make sure parking brake is completely back. Release it and at the same time pull pedal back to see if brake light goes out. To check fluid level, you will probably have to pull dog house off and look under floor on drivers side. Difficult to get at but can be done. If fluid is low, be sure to check front brake pads because as they wear caliper fluid volume increases. Otherwise, you should look for a cause for pressure imbalance between the front and rear brakes.

Possibly, but MOST Dash Brake lights have to do with the Fluid level and the CORRECT proportion/balance of fluid between the front and rear brakes AND the Emergency brake switch.
    1. IF it has a Ford chassis, the odds are the foot emergency brake switch is bad. Regardless the emergency brake switch will activate this light on any model chassis, Ford's are more prone to have a switch failure
    2. The system has a proportioning valve between the front and rear brake systems. IF either system loses fluid, ANYTHING that causes a fluid imbalance between the 2, the valve moves and causes the dash brake light to come ON. LOW fluid if too low will cause that.
    3. Any computer for a ABS system usually has a separate ABS failure light. They do not use the regular "Brake" light switch for this. A 1993 model probably does NOT have any ABS type system. Doug
