1998 Newmar Dutch Star dash light issue

My LED dash lights come on when I start up my motor home, but when I turn on the headlights, those dash lights turn off. This can't be right, because at night is when I would need them most. I recently purchased this and haven't driven it at night, so I am not sure when to problem started. I messed with the fuse box, but couldn't seem to find any problems there, although no labels on the fuse box seemed to be what I was looking for. Any ideas on this?

Thanks in advance.

  • 1998 Newmar DS. The odds are the LED lights are 120 volt. They have a Inverter about the size of a golf ball (Square cube) that is connected to the 12 volt wiring. yes, it should be ON all the time. I will bet someone has rewired the system. Access the lights and follow the wires from the lights and I will bet you see that Inverter cube. There are usually 3 or 4 of these Inverter cubes for all the dash lights. They are wire tied in the bundle behind the dash cluster. Doug

I should have clarified---The Lights have AC voltage but NOT 120 volts. The AC voltage this Inverter supplies is in the 8 to 10 volt AC range if I remember correctly.
  • Make sure that you have the dimmer switch for the dash lights turned up enough. If your first DP the switch is not always easy to locate. Not sure where it is on a 1998
  • First thing I would do is insure a good ground connection between the dash and chassis.
