2002 HR QUITE ONAN 4000 gen wont start

Just purchased this Alantis 2002 class c quite 4000 Onan gen wont start

Previous owner said they had hooked it up to a gas can and it ran fine

I disconnected that fire hazard but now gen wont start

I made sure gas is flowing up to gen not sure if carb is getting gas.  It is turning over and trying to start but no luck on getting it running. Need help to figure this out.

  • Thanks for the added information.

Number one suspect is the easiest. Does the RV have more than a 1/4 tank of fuel? Usually the feed for the generator comes out about 1/4 tank from the bottom of the tank. This way you don't accidentally let the generator run the RV out of fuel by running all night. If the tank is anywhere near 1/4 tank I would put about 10 gallons if fuel in it and see if you have more luck.

Next would be to look under the RV and trace the fuel line from the generator back to the tank. Is it possible the line is too close to one of the slides and getting pinched off when the slide moves? Is there a zip tie cinched super tight holding up the hose so that it is restricting the flow?

After that it kind of depends on if you are comfortable with messing with the fuel line. I've been working on my cars since I was a teenager. So I'm comfortable with removing a fuel hose and capping off the tank. If it was mine I would remove the whole hose and cap off the tank. Then inspect and replace as needed. If you're not comfortable there are mobile RV techs that could probably diagnose and repair this in an hour or two.

  • Did it start when it was still hooked up to the gas can? Or did you try temporarily hooking it back up to the gas can to see if it now starts? The idea being it might help diagnose where it is failing.

For instance, if the generator runs with the temporary gas can sitting on the ground you know the fuel pump and the generator itself work. But if it only works with the gas can sitting up on a table like sitting above the generator; Then the fuel pump probably does not work and the generator is being fed fuel by gravity.

If it sucks fuel and the generator runs with the gas can sitting on the ground then you most likely have a damaged or deteriorated fuel supply line from the fuel tank to the generator.

Ok previous owner said gen was running fine no issue but he decided to replace fuel line??? After replacing fuel line gen would only run a few minutes then cut off. He said he took it to repair shop was told it ran fine they ran it fur several hours. But when he would get it home it again would only run a couple minutes and cut off but if he connected the gas can sitting on the ground it would run. I'm not sure why he did decided to replace fuel line he said he thought it looked “old”

      Now it will not start

follow the gas line and see if it has an air lock in it or is kinked anywhere.  you might even just try syphon some gas through the fuel line and see if that works.  I am not sure how the tank in set up for the genny, Is it a dedicated tank for the genny?  if so make sure the venting on the tank is working, even if it is off a  main gas tank it should still be vented.  you can check this by just taking off the gas tank cap and try running the genny

  • I don't get it. Why would it have been hooked up to a gas can and not to the gas tank of the Motorhome like normal?

Anyhow, you might be experiencing problems with the fuel pump or the carburetor might be gummed up. On the other hand, could be a spark issue, not enough info to say.
