2003 Discovery electrical problem

Just picked the coach up from summer storage. Due to regular charging batteries are in reasonable shape, 12.4v. Problem is that when on shore power or gen power the only circuits that have power are the ones that are not powered by the inverter when dry camping. Also Inverter is not energized and not charging.
I checked the breaker for the inverter and all switch setting. All as they should be. Any ideas?
I need help soon as we head south in four days.

thanks in advance

Bob

  • Before buying a replacement 458 IMO consider various alternatives to suit your actual camping style needs. Like how often off-grid etc.

You can get by with separate inverter and any old sort of converter/charger and spend a lot less if that's all you need.

Buy in the States on your way "South" of course.
  • thanks to all for their input. I have done everything listed above including BDPREES suggestion. Yes the wire nuts were almost gone but cleaning them up did not make a difference. AC in is good, dc in is good. Nothing happens. Looks like the wallet is going to take a beating for a new one. Ebay here I come....

    thanks

  • The Xantrex was what I had the wire nut problem with. Look between the two AC lines input/output lines and you will see an inspection plate that can be removed. Pull the plate and check the connections. Make sure you are disconnected from all power first though.
  • Thanks for the comments. Model of Inverter is Xantrex Freedom Heart 458. There is 12v at the DC input terminals and 115v AC on the AC input . The external generator transfer switch is working. There is AC to the Main 50amp circuit breakers. From that panel one 30amp breaker supplies the AC to the inverter. Every breaker on the AC panel has 115v on the output and every terminal of the EMS circuit board has 115v except for the neutral terminal. I suspect that internal circuit boards in the Xantrex or it's internal transfer switch are done but how do I check it?

    Thanks

  • Think I would start at the inverter. Check for a fuse/breaker on the inverter itself. On my last coach all power actually ran through the inverter whether on shore, gen, or battery. If no bad fuse/breaker meter the output of the inverter. I actually had a wire nut come loose inside the inverter and a wire came unhooked.
  • What is the exact model of your inverter/charger? Some have little resets by their 120v outlets. Some have 120v hard wired sub-panels. You seem to be having a transfer switch problem but then some have the external transfer switch and others have an internal switch to go "pass through" 120v on shore power or gen.

First step of course is with your multimeter, confirm there is 12v at the inverter's DC input terminals in case the battery connection has been lost (there should be a huge fuse on the positive DC wire to the battery--is it ok?)
