6 speed Allison shifting issue

I just bought a Monaco Diplomat it has the 6 speed allison with a push button trans. When you put the unit in drive a number 6 comes up. I would think the unit should start out in number 1. When you start driving the unit feels sluggish.also when do you use the mode button?

That is very unusual. Most chassis makers spec their Allison ECM's with a "lower than 6th gear" pre-select for the exhaust brake-- 2nd and 4th being common choices. But, yes any gear can be programmed in.

My first question is whether your coach is properly wired and working as designed. Second would be whether the Allison ECM is properly programmed.

Said another way, if is like 99% of coaches that have an OE exhaust brake, the signal goes from brake switch/throttle switch to the Allison ECM and then to the exhaust brake solenoid. Before spending money on the Allison ECM reprogramming, make sure everything else is working as it should. If, for example the relay does not receive a "throttle is closed" signal, the exhaust brake will not come on and the Allison shift pad WILL stay "6".

Your chassis maker is the best source of information on this.

  • OK, Two very different shift pads by Allison:

    Those with ONE "gear window".

    Those with TWO "gear windows".

If one gear window, it indicates the "pre-select" gear-- that is the gear TO WHICH the transmission will shift under ideal conditions. So consider "6" to be the same as "D" on your car. And, when you apply your exhaust brake, the window will change to whatever your pre-select gear is for exhaust brake use, with 2nd and 4th being popular choices.

If two windows, the left is the same as described above, with the right window being the actual gear you are in.
  • My 06 shows 6 in F as that is the highest gear in can shift to.

The only time economy mode will save fuel is in rolling hills country.
  • On the older Rigs this is Normal . D is Drive and the Transmission will shift up to the 6 th gear when you reach a predetermined Speed.

The Mode Button allows You to select between Normal and Economy. Ours defaults to Normal which works well most of the Time here in Mountain Country!

When We are on a trip across the flatlands I punch the Economy Button which changes the shift points .

Frankly I don't see any difference in fuel mileage in either mode!

When the Engine Brake is turned on My rig will limit the Top gear to 4 although it will only shift down from 6 or 5 ,when I have applied the Brakes to actually slow down.then it automatically shifts down as the rig slows down.
  • On my MDT 2 numbers come up, 6 and 1. 6 indicates the highest gear it will go to, 1 indicates what it's in now.

Your owner's manual should discuss this, and the mode button.
