Atwood propane detector re-install

My Atwood propane detector Series 2001 died. The replacement model 36270/31014 is about 1/2" smaller (meaning the existing hole in the wall is a little large). I'm sure others have faced this problem when replacing the unit and I'm wondering what type of creative ideas did you use to mount the new detector??

thanks
  • You could buy a elctrical blank plate big enough to cover the hole and mount the detector to it.
  • When I encounter this sort of problem, I often construct some sort of a backer plate out of Luan or something similar, finished appropriately. For a white detector a little white enamel works nicely and I think is a bit less fussy than varnish.
  • I just mounted it on the top end of the old hole, the gap is really not noticeable to me at the bottom.

Now....If my rig was pristine I would get a switch plate large enough, cut it out, mount the new unit to that and then put the switch plate up over the original hole...done

    PS - I just noticed Farmboy's post....sorry
  • I also just replaced my Saf-T-Alert brand propane gas detector. Was going through the camper checking things out and saw the label on the detector said to be replaced after 60 months from date of purchase. I just bought my trailer which is a 2010 so at 96 months I figured it was time to replace it. I bought a replacement combo unit that does Propane and CO. Fortunately it was an exact fit. Fits in a rectangle about 1 1/2" x 6".
If it were not I'd have used luan or thick piece of plastic vinyl wall covering to make a new mounting plate.
I also replaced the battery operated smoke detectors as I guessed they were the same age.
  • yeah, I thought about a 2 gang electrical blank plate but not sure how for flush mount I could cut the rectangular mounting hole in it without breaking it. Maybe my Dremel tool will work. If the excessive space is only at the bottom of the new bracket that will not be an issue.
  • A nicely finished wood blank with correct size opening for new detector

Probably the easiest and best looking..
  • When I replaced the large, yet worthless radio with a smaller, DIN sized stereo, a piece of luan painted flat black made the perfect backplate.
