automatic transfer switch humming

My automatic transfer switch is humming. This is new. I understand this switch has to do with controlling power between a generator and shore power but I may be mistaken. Although the 5ver is gen prepped it doesnt have a generator at this time. Is this something to be concerned about? If so is there an easy and safe way to turn it off? There is no switch on the box, just three heavy gage wires going into/out of the box. I am hooked to shore power and have been running a/c daily while here in Orlando, FL. Thanks.

It actually is a priority switch. when hooked to a 50 amp circuit, the switch will close the external cable to the coach, if you start the generator, the generator has priority and after a dwell time to allow the generator to come up to speed the switch will close the generator side of the switch connecting the generator to the coach, and at the same time disconnect the external cable.

when you plug in the external power, and shut down the generator, the switch will open the generator side and close the external connection.

there will never be a time when both will be closed.
  • Mine was humming loudly enough to make it difficult to sleep. It's located in a basement compartment below the bed. I was still in my one year warranty period, so had it replaced. Much better, can barely hear it.

Correct. The OEM installs the Transfer Box and usually runs the Genset wire to a 4x4 box close to the Genset compartment. When you install the Genset, you just connect the output wiring from the Genset to the wires in that 4x4 electrical box and everything is automatic. Check your line voltage with a digital voltmeter. Humming can be an indication of LO line voltage and/or bad frequency(htz). The voltage/frequency should be 120/60htz. NOT dangerous, just not to spec and especially if the CG is full with everyone using there AC units. Doug

Mine hums too. The switch has a solenoid coil that holds the contacts closed, this senses the alternating current and hums. the heavier the load the louder it will hum.

Low humming is normal for transfer switches. Sometimes just a small smack on the cover might stop what is vibrating... The windings in the transformer relay coil that is activated by the shore power cable is what is vibrating something making the HUMMING sound.

To stop the humming would be to unplug the Shore Power cable but I doubt if you want to do that haha...

I would be more concerned if feeling the cover and it is hot to touch then hearing humming. It the cover is HOT this might indicate the relay CONTACTS are not making good contact and heating up due to your large Air Conditioner load all day long...
