Battery Power 5th wheel

I recently had a my batteries on my 5er go bad, they were about 9 years old so I replaced them with two 6v golf cart batteries ( saw many posts here about using these types of batteries) After I installed the batteries things were working fine. When I got to our campsite this weekend. I went to disconnect the cable from the truck to the trailer and it was stuck so I had wiggle the connections a few times. It finally came off but as I was doing this,I thought I heard like a crack, like when a fuse blows. After disconnecting, I got now power from just running on batteries. I get it when hooked to the truck or to shore power, but not just from the batteries. I checked them and they seem to be fully charged. I also noticed that from the Positive cable from the battery to the trailer there looks like and "in-line" fuse. Does anyone have any idea of what the problem could be? You can't open the enclosure so I just can't pull it to see if it's bad?
I have an 07 Flagstaff 5er, 8528GTSS. Thanks in advance for any help.

I had a wire get "Pregnant" turns out it was corrosion, no power (Well not much) got past it. I'd have to see your system eyes on to tell you more.
  • Check for power on the downstream side of the fuse. A clamp meter is the best solution to see if current is traveling through the fuse.
Otherwise, a test light with very sharp point works well for this. The jacket on the wire is punctured by the point and the cable with clip is lead to ground. After testing, I put a drop of liquid tape on the hole to prevent corrosion.

There isn't by any chance a metal can circuit breaker on the positive battery cable? Some are manual reset by pushing a small button.

That enclosed device likely "is" the fuse and not intended to be opened.

  • Never heard of a fuse that was not accessible. I would start there.
