To answer your question about frozen food, the wife uses a Coleman cooler to put the frozen stuff in, at least for now (in the summer). I'm getting a Dometic Cool Box in the very near future for her car for the market and for the backseat of the truck when we go camping.

I probably could run an electric car and utilize the second meter we have for out electric hot water heater. We still run a second, dedicated meter (at a much reduced rate) for domestic HWH that I could tie into for a plug in. The utility did away with the program years ago but existing customers were 'grandfathered in' and it's a cheap date. Even less than running a NG HWH. You have me thinking....lol

Good afternoon sidecar. I thought I would jump in and answer your question on heat and AC. So the answer is...it depends. Some EV’s use straight electric heat. Others use a heat pump. As far as the effect on range goes, a nice round number is 20 percent effect. Having said that, our car has heated seats and steering wheel so if our butts are warm and my hands are warm we tend to leave the heat around 18 Celsius and it doesn’t affect the range as bad. Both the heat and the AC is instant and you can pre heat it or cool it (turn it on) from your smart phone while it is in the garage. No fumes right. They are really nice cars and in my opinion bang for your buck is pretty good. If you are going to be in a traffic jam in the heat an electric vehicle is a good place to be. An EV can sit still with the AC on for hours and still get you home.

Anyway, in our Air Force days we used to live an hour from groceries on a little Radar site in Saskatchewan. So yah, I hear yah. Sometimes that’s just the way it is. :)

Run the numbers and overall cost will be far lower with an inexpensive high MPG gas powered car.

If you are over 40 mpg that certainly helps on reducing oil consumption.
Electric vehicle all but eliminates oil consumption.

This was not entirely about low cost but to reduce or eliminate oil consumption.
Lowest cost is a $100 4 cylinder beater.

Not to initiate a supply chain discussion but, electric vehicles really don't eliminate fossil fuel consumption, they just move the point of fueling from the pump, to the fossil fueled power plant. The exception is, of course a nuclear fueled power plant but then you have the issue of radioactive spent fuel disposal.

I look at an electric car as a 'feel good' thing. Makes a person feel good by not DIRECTLY contributing to the carbon footprint, but they still are, indirectly.

The only alternative would be solar panel recharging but I've yet to see a car festooned with panels going down the road. Maybe someday but probably not in my lifetime.

Not sure a 100 buck 4 banger beater would get lower per mile cost in as much as most 'beaters' I've seen lack even minimal maintenance. So a beater would not be cost efficient. Besides, who wants to drive a beater anyway, let alone use a beater for a toad.

Good morning sidecar. I think it has a lot do to with where the power comes from. So a province or state or even Country that gets all its power from Hydro for example has much better results than one that gets its power from coal and of course there are many. The other thing is, grids in most modern countries are getting cleaner every year. I believe you are in the US so using that as a reference, coal is now only providing about a third of the US grid power. (not an expert, just repeating something I read) Because the emissions of the vehicle depend on the grid this is a good thing as every time the grid gets 1 percent cleaner the vehicle gets one percent cleaner. Electric vehicles can be part of the solution, not the entire solution. They are not yet suitable for everyone's needs but are pretty good at what they do.

I agree 100% that coal is becoming less and less of a fuel for power plants domestically however, new plants and refits are running NG and the abundance of NG is coming from oil fracking operations in PA, Ohio and and WVA. NG plants run much cleaner but again the NG is an offshoot of oil exploration. Urban dwellers can benifit from an electric vehicle. Where we live it's not an option because of the distances involved in just going to the grocery store. Not everyone lives in a densely populated area..

It's my feeling that there is a lot of manipulation concerning fuel costs at all levels.

Friends returned from visit to Tuscany. Reported a Fiat diesel rental gave them a 58 mpg average for over one thousand Km use.

No matter, a motor vehicle can get 500 miles per gallon, and fuel will raise to a hundred dollar per gallon. The refiners would love to see it. California's Central Committee would love to see it.

Just wait until the politburo decides to TAX electrical sales to utilities. Think it won't happen. Hahahahaha naive G.I.
