"Buzzing" from Ignition and Brakes: Ford F-53

2012 Class A Winnebago Adventurer Ford F-53 V10:

Two separate "buzzing" sounds.

With the key in the ignition and before turning the key to start the motor, If the brake pedal is depressed, a buzzing sound occurs from the pedal area under the dash. Once the engine is running, the noise stops when the brake pedal is depressed.

Also, a different "buzzing" sound occurs after the key is inserted in the ignition and turned to the "on" position before actually starting the engine. Does not make the sound in accessory position.

Both sounds go away when the engine is running.

From other forum searches, both appear to be related the ABS Hydroboost Power Braking System and/or the Brake Assist module.

I've had another suggest, this "buzzing noises" should not occur. These sounds have been there since buying the motorhome. I've always considered the noises as part of the braking system.

Are these noises normal and can someone explain why the noises occurs?

Many thanks in advance for your response.
  • It could be the relay that allows you to shift from park into a gear.
It could be caused by low voltage to it due to a loose or corroded connection.
Try shutting down with the transmission in neutral. Turn to on, depress the brake pedal to see if it is there. If it is not, the linkage could be out of adjustment.
  • Adventurer Buck,

At least one of them is normal. If the engine isn't running, when the brake peddle is pressed, it's normal to hear the HydroBoost/HydroMax assist motor run to provide help with braking. It's an electric motor running a pump that you hear. The assist with the motor running comes from the power-steering pump. All Ford V10 F-53 chassis do it.

If you've got another noise, I'm not sure what would be causing that.
  • When you don't have that noise when pushing the brake pedal with key off than you have a brake problem, that is there if you ever loose power while driving you can still brake the motorhome to a safe stop, especially on a big hill.

    -----------

I've always looked at the "buzz" sound when the key is in the ON position as a sound that indicated power was at the ignition and ready to turn-over the motor. Would turning the key to ON (not accessory) cause the Hydroboost's electric motor to turn-on or would there be another electric driven instrument?

When the engine is NOT running, and brakes are pressed, an electric motor is activated.. You may also get an alarm indicating there is something wrong with the power steering pump (it is not running you see).
  • When the right window is rolled down all the way but the left only cracked an inch when you activate the speed control does the brake pedal sound like a clarinet?

Just funnin witcha - trying to put a smile on your face. :)

The weirdness of new vehicles is getting scary.
  • Anytime you press on the brake without the engine running you'll hear the Hydroboost electric motor running (if there's any juice in the battery). The key doesn't need to be on to actuate it.

I'm not sure what the noise is you're hearing just by turning the key on.
  • Winnebago has alarms for different things. On our new Itasca, we had a dinging alarm that took us a while to find. Thought that it had something to do with the slide, first MH with a slide that we have ever had. Finally found that the swiveling passenger seat lock was not latched. I
  • The "buzzing" is completely normal. The electric pump runs under two conditions. One if the pedal is pressed with key off and two if the ignition is on but the engine isn't running. The second condition is important as it gives you braking assist if you are going down the road and the engine quits.
