cameras gor home monitoring

Hi all
We have a Uniden camera system, with four cameras, to monitor our home when we are away. The last two trips, 2 weeks in, they stopped working. When we got home, I unplugged them, plugged them back in and all was well.

I would like to replace these with something more reliable. I'd like to record sometimes, but mainly, they are for monitoring for peace of mind.

Does anyone use reliable home monitoring cameras? I'm only interested in something I can purchase and set up, nothing that needs a monthly fee. Thank you for any help.n
  • I have been very impressed with Reo-Link cameras. These are wired IP cameras. Simple to setup. I've had 8 running and recording 24/7 for the past year, 7 are the RLC410 model and 1 RLC420 model. They've only gone down once and that was during a power outage for 2 days after Hurricane Matthew. I record on a computer with 3TB Hard drive. The cameras are 4 MP cameras. They are setup to record at 2560x1440 with 30fps and 2048kbps Max. Bitrate. The 3TB drive stores about 15 days worth of video at those settings.

The software that comes with the cameras works pretty well on a PC or you can buy a NVR for a reasonable price. I went with a computer because I had a spare one that wasn't being used. These cameras don't have to be setup to record, they work just as well stand-alone for monitoring only. They only need to be hooked up to your router. No computer or NVR necessary. Each camera can be setup to can send picture or video when there is motion, as long as there is an internet connection. You don't need a computer or NVR for motion alerts.

Both models I have include audio. The mic is pretty sensitive and conversations are easily heard.

They are a relatively new company. They have great customer service, at least via email. I've always gotten a response within a few hours and it has always been the correct answer.

They sell wireless cameras as well.

  • I have a 4 camera wired Zmodo system that's been up and running for 3 years. They're the outside cameras. Inside, I went with inexpensive wireless Tenvis cameras because I didn't mind setting up port forwarding on the router.

If I ever want to expand to an 8 camera system outside, I'm going to use Zmodo again.
  • Thanks 2oldman, I'll look into them.

Shadow Catcher, I tried to contact the manufacturer with no luck.
I just would like something a little easier to deal with.
  • My question would be why did thy go off line, power surge? We have a whole house surge protector and a second layer point surge suppressors. They depending on the model use 2.4 GHz frequency, which is used for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. First of all it may cause some interference and what's more important, that Wi-Fi frequency is vulnerable for hacking and intercepting.
May well not be your problem, have you contacted the manufacturer for their feedback?
  • I have 2 Nest cameras, and they are almost 100% reliable. I'm very impressed with how they report activity, and also report when they are offline for whatever reason. They always recover within a few hours. That doesn't happen but maybe once a month. And they are wireless to my internet router.

    I highly recommend them.
  • Looks like enough cameras, but I was hoping for something that would work wirelessly to the conttol unit.
  • I have Lorex cameras/DVR at my house, I was hesitant but they've been rock solid and have never had to reboot the DVR. Very handy to be able to check the house remotely with the phone app. Got mine at Costco.
