Camp Chef Explorer Stove - Accessories?

We just bought the 2-burner Camp Chef Explorer (CCE) stove to replace my 35+ year old Primus propane gas stove with corroded orifices and less than controllable flame(s). I think that I will love the new CCE stove with a much greater output.

They also suggest that the CCE stove may not simmer well, and I wonder if a flame spreader/diffuser would help with that?

I also bought their reversable griddle/grill. It suggests that we should use their "special" oil to season the grill. Is that necessary?

They also offer a BBQ grill box as an option. I like the idea a modular cooking system, but its seems that it may be difficult to clean, rather that a contained BBQ that I currently use.

Any thoughts?
  • I too bought the Camp Chef to replace an old stove. Mine was a 45+ yo Coleman. So far I'm pleased with the stove. Have to find a larger storage space than I had for the old stove. I haven't encounterred any problem with simmering. I'm interested in following this post to read what others post.
  • I too have the Camp Chef 2 burner stove. Love it, I have the griddle, and BBQ Box for it so I can use it in almost any configuration imaginable. I have noticed that you have to be careful not to scorch anything because the burners really put out some heat. I bought a couple of "Flame Tamers" to offset this problem and they really work well.

How is the BBQ grill box to clean? Does it drip into the burners below?

It does look like the Flame Tamers will be necessary.

I have had a 3 burner camp chef for 8 years. Absolutly love it.
I have the BBQ grill box in one burner size and we lover it. Never had issues with it dripping on burner. I alway crank the burner on high after cooking to clean it off.
Also have the two burner size grill with a handle and fat channel in front. Awesome unit for cooking breakfast for the gang.
I don't have flame difuser but am going to get or make some. I would help even the heat on the grill.

Thanks. I like the idea of the BBQ grill box, but was concerned about clean-up.

I exchanged my expired propane tanks yesterday, at a Blue Rhino kiosk, that suffered from rust in the salt air. It's a great way to get another 12 years of use from the tanks.
  • We have the 3 burner ... we do a lot of group camping and it works great for cooking for a crowd. Custom grill covers all 3 burners but temp control gets a bit difficult since those burners put out some serious BTUs.

Ours is 3 years old, and I see the new ones come with adjustable pads on the legs - just bought the adjustable replacement feet and upgraded mine. No more wedges and leveling.

Sorry for the late response, the BBQ box grills are cast iron, not porcelain coated, but I think they are relatively easy to clean with a wire brush or like another poster stated just crank the heat up and let the gunk bake off like a self cleaning oven. No the drippings don't drop onto the burners, they fall into a baffle underneath the grill grates.

Thanks. I just ordered 2 flame tamers from Walmart for less than $10 each and less than $5 shipping. Other prices on-line were from $22 to $58 for one with shipping. . . amazing.

After reading the reviews for the grill-box, I'm reluctant to buy one. Lots of complaints about the bottom rusting out?
