Carefree slide topper makes bang on extend

Loud! Something not right. I -assume- the culprit is the anti-billow device, but not sure. I have printed out and stared at the Carefree installation pdf and have come to the idea that I should remove the "pin tab" held there by 2 screws and see if the problem goes away. Is that a good or dumb idea?

That said, I have found elsewhere on the www that it might be the motor somehow, but those comments don't seem to be exactly for a Carefree unit. Confusing.

This awning is installed over the small slide on a 2018 Rockwood 2606WS.

  • Another thing to check. Make sure the "bang" isn't coming from the slide seal wiper. When the side goes in, the wiper eventually will turn from sticking out along the slide, and when coming out the wiper does the reverse. Sometimes on ours, when the slide goes out, the bottom wiper "bangs" when the wiper comes over "center".

The anti-billow devices are adjustable. The idea is if the topper tries to unroll while driving down the road, the 'ear' will hit the bracket on the coach wall and keep the topper furled. When the slide goes out, by the time the 'ear' swings around to the bracket location, it's now too far out to hit the bracket. DON'T leave it off! Our first trip with a new RV, our topper started billowing out due to improper adjustment by the factory. Watch closely from a ladder while someone runs the slide out and watch the clearance of the ear to the bracket. Should be a near-miss if the adjustment is correct. The 'ear' is adjustable on the topper roller but one screw is usually put through a non-slotted hole to permanently locate it once the adjustment is right. Take it off to see if the noise goes away but be sure to put it back.

Carefree uses a plunger assembly as the anti-billow device, Dometic uses a rotating arm, which do you have???

  • If you are alone have a neighbor deploy the slide while you observe from outside and/or under to identify the source of the noise.
  • Duh. Yeah, no motor. The slide out PULLS it out.

The bang occurs only during the first few inches or inch the slideout comes out.

    It is a Carefree. \

The trouble with the "dealer" is that we are fulltime and don't live anywhere specific, and right now we are in FL and the "dealer" is in Ohio. The problem there is that I've run into the idiotic "did you buy your unit from us" excuse, and they won't work on it. I guess I just have to call and call until I find a dealer anywhere around here that will do "warranty" work, the further catch being that the slideout toppers were installed by the dealer after-market.
  • 1. Slide Toppers do NOT have motors. NONE have a motor
    2. Is the bang constant or only during the first few inches of extension?
    3. Are you positive it is a Carefree Slide Topper? I ask because your research on line had pointed to a motor and NONE have a motor.
    4. NEW unit, Do NOT mess with it. Take it back to the dealer. It is under warranty. Doug
