I bought my current rig last May. The keys were missing and the guy gave me some copy of a copy of a copy that he said would work.Well, after fighting with the thing to get it to work, I just wandered down to an RV parts store and bought a whole new door lock / deadbolt assembly. Ever since day 1 the thing has been difficult to operate and I have to fiddle fart with key to get it open. And then the key sticks. Hard to get in hard to take out. Yes I oiled it.I got to get the TT from storage last Sunday and I managed to get the deadbolt open but no way the latch lock would give. Grrrr. Gal at my storage place was standing beside me. Let me try she says. I step back and say have at it! She finally managed to get it open. With the door open I lock it and try again. The whole lock cylinder fell out of the door.What a piece of junk! Less than a year old and it is garbage.Brand name on the inside of the door lock says FIC. Only marking on it aside from Lock Unlock! So, question is:Are there any decent manufacturers of door lock assemblies? Or are they all the same pile of junk?I need to get another new one but want something that actually works and I don't have to stand there fighting with the key.I actually have to replace all my outside locks. They are all hard to operate.

Fastec Industrial Corp (FIC) had a recall on defective locks. Check to see if yours was one. There may be a free replacement in it for you.The recall is for locks made Jan 2006 thru Apr 2013.

Bob, if that lock is a FIC, they have a recall on some of the locks. I don't have the info handy, put I did a post a few months ago about it. They are replacing them free. A search here you should find it

The lock recall is a lot bigger then posted on the web. After I got the replacement locks I was speaking to a friend and told him. His was a 2003 truck camper and his lock was also in the recall. If you bought a new set....take it back for a replacement. Why keep something you paid for that was defective????

Sounds like a tri-mark... Here is what you doThe deadbolts on a tri-mark are not bad but the striker bolt is a problemTake the pieces (Do not loose the spring) to a good metal smith and have him carve you one out of genuine STEEL. that will last the life of your rig. Even Brass will outlast the cheap pot metal they use to make 'em.

The same procedure should work.

Bolt is a non issue. I don't care what grade material it made from.

Challenge with this thing is that both locks have been sticky and hard to operate since the day it was new.
I fiddle fool with the key to get it in and when I get it there I have to continue to fiddle fool with it to get the durned thing to work.

And now the cheapo thing fell apart trying to unlock it.

I hate cheap junk. I don't mind paying extra $$ for quality. But when it falls apart in my hand, yeah, I'm more than marginally annoyed!

Bottom line - this thing is a piece of junk.

I experienced the same issues with my new Fastec lock. After having a key stuck in the lock, and about 15 minutes spent before it pulled out, I took a file to the edges of the keys (aka deburr). So far, so good.

Here's a link to the recall letter they sent out, listing the specific locks that are covered. Toward the bottom is an 800 number to call for instructions on how to return your lock and receive a replacement.

Since my current rig has FIC handles (the elongated ones that are FIC only), I've wanted to see if a modern "3D scanner" would work to make CAD diagrams of every part, then take the files to a place like Solid Concepts and have them make a handle for me where every part but the lock cylinder would be made from sintered Iconel.

That way, it would last for a very long time, although likely would be obnoxiously expensive.

OK... I just talked to the first owner and he found this Tri-mark brand lock on-line after breaking a key off in the oe lock. He's going to look for some record of where he found it. It is high quality, both locksets work smooth as silk and it uses a double sided key. I searched and couldn't find exactly the same one but I can send you a picture if you PM your # or email to me. I'll get back again if my friend finds anything. Craig

This is good info. I bought the change key from another source, and hit Fastec's website for the cylinders. The reason I'm buying them is because I need to rekey one handle to the same key.

Hello Bobs your Uncle... If you are still in Calgary, you could take your unit to Bucars RV just north of Calgary (they are located just west of Cross Iron Mills Mall). They are good folks and will likely take care of you. If there is a recall, I would be very surprised if they wouldn't repair it and take care of the "paperwork" for you. They are good folks and will try to do what they can to take care of you.
