Delaminating Floor

We have a floor which is a sandwich of 1/4 in plywood top (vinyl covering), foam core, 1/4 in plywood on bottom. The top layer is starting to come un-glued from the core, and actually starting to raise up (about 1/4 - 1/2 inch). Anyone had this problem, and know a fix, any ideas would be appreciated.

Thru bolting will help but unless you put in a ton of them, it won't provide much in the way of strength.

It's a bit bigger of a project but if you pull up the floor covering, drill some small holes and inject epoxy (check to make sure it's compatible with the foam. Then use weights or thru bolts to hold things together while the epoxy cures. Once done, put the floor covering back down and it should be like new. The trick is to get good coverage with the injected epoxy to make sure the unbonded area is rebonded.

sounds like a plan to me.

  • screws or long skinny bolts. what is the problem with them sticking thru bottom plywood?

  • If there is nothing between the top and bottom layer of plywood other than foam I would think you could just run some screws from the top, through the foam and into the bottom layer of plywood pulling it all together firmly. Just be sure you know what's in there or under there before you begin. The screws need to be just long enough to get a good bit on the bottom 1/4" plywood without going beyond too far.
