Dometic RM66E not cycling on gas

Hi all...my Dometic RM66E refer (circa 1978, Class C) works fine on shore power - cools nicely and maintains temperature based on the electric thermostat setting. When running on propane it also cools well - too well in fact, because it disregards the gas thermostat setting and runs continuously. After a day or two it gets down to about 20 degrees in the fridge area.

I would be ok turning the gas on and off every day as a workaround except that the unit's piezoelectric starter is also non-functional, so solo starting is a bit of a circus act involving a bent fork (to hold the pilot gas valve open), running out of the cabin, and 2 or 3 vigorous "pops" of the accumulated gas before the pilot will light without blowing itself out. Arguably this is a part of the camping experience that could benefit from less excitement.

I did manage to find the original schematic for the refer, and more or less understand the various parts and how they work, though my experience with gas plumbing in general and rv refers in particular is limited. Wondering if anyone has had this issue and/or is familiar enough with this or similar units to advise on a reasonable troubleshooting procedure and possible DIY repair options. I checked into professional repair and new/used replacement options and they are all prohibitively expensive, so if it's not possible to fix it I'll keep on doing what I've been doing.

Thanks in advance for any ideas!
  • Only a guess, but there may be a problem with the controls and it has switched to the default mode which is steady on. Different conditions will cause that. Running it through a diagnostic procedure according to the service manual would be required.
  • Your year/model refer has what is called a BYPASS LP tstat. That means you have 2 tstats
    1. Is the 120 tstat
    2. Is the lp bypass tstat and what this does is--it is on FULL flame when cooling. When it reaches the set temp, the LP pressure is "Bypassed" to a lower pressure and the flame then goes down to what you might call a "pilot" flame. It stays lit but does not have the Heat to continue cooling. You just need a new LP tstat. Doug
  • A couple of things- the safety valve is right at the burner on that model- just to the left, the thermocouple goes in to the top, and the button that gets pushed is on the bottom, with a plastic "fulcrum" that changes the pull in to a push up. Just hold that up while you light it.

The LP thermostat is just to the left of that. A few things could cause the LP thermostat to over cool- the capillary sensing tube could be loose (there should be 2 clamped to the fins inside), the thermostat could be dirty, keeping it from closing,

or a tiny o-ring that is on a bypass screw could be missing:

This type of repair isn't rocket science, but it does involve mucking about with LP gas components- but these were made to be serviced.
I have the service manual at http://bryantrv.com/docs2/docs/RM77.pdf
  • Thanks a ton guys, this really helps!

Chris, your drawings and esp. the service manual are just the ticket - looking forward to getting my hands dirty next weekend. Will post an update with the outcome (then on to the next gas appliance - the oven!). ;)

    Thanks again,
    Jim
