First trip in new camper is this normal

I made my first trip in my new keystone carbon 357. It has self adjusting brakes. Everything went fine on the trip but I have a habit of feeling the hubs after a trip. Two hubs were very hot to the touch the other two were hot but not as bad is this normal break in time or should I be concerned.
  • Jack it up and check how each wheel spins by hand.
Could be the hot pair is too tight.
Or the cool pair is too lose.
  • I occassionaly check mine at refueling stops. Hot bearings can be isolated from hot brakes by a highway drive followed by one brake application coming to a stop. One normal brake application wont get the wheel that hot.
Heavy in-town driving mine will get too hot to hold my fingers on for more than a second, highway driving they are more than warm but not too hot to hold fingers on. Mine are not always perfectly equal in temp between sides, and never been too concerned about it.
  • Here in PA, if the trailer is heavy enough to have brakes, it is EVERY wheel on EVERY axle.

Had a trailer made in NC and delivered with some equipment, but they didn't do the brakes on ALL axles, even though I specifically told them it was required to license in PA. Sent it back.

Since it is new, make sure someone didn't over tighten the wheel hub nut, causing the bearings to heat up.
  • Rtaylor, I obviously cant swear on your unit, but when I checked the new units at RVUSA it shows rear drum brakes as standard, and says front are not an option. You may want to double check the lines to verify.
  • Not normal break in. Pull the hub end cap and see if there is sufficient grease on the bearings. What was the daytime temp? Were both of the hot hubs on the sunny side of the trailer?

My hubs normally match the outside temp. Sometimes that is to hot to touch :)

Why are you sure it has brakes on all four wheels?

    Matt

I am positive there are brakes on all four wheels
  • With two much hotter than the others the brakes may be warming a little but with the other two also being warm Tire pressures may be low.
  • Sounds to me like the brakes are dragging. Self-adjusting is only as useful as it is accurate. The hubs should be warm after a trip, but not hot.

To test, jack to get each wheel off the ground and see how easily it turns. Should spin freely. If not, if there is resistance, brakes are mis-adjusted, "self-adjusting" be hanged.
