Generator doesn't run at constant speed?

I have a Champion 4000 generator that I use to run the AC on my fifth wheel. It doesn't run at a constant speed unless I have the choke just slightly closed. I cleaned the carb, lines and tank. But, it still runs that way. I noticed that you can put the long spring on top of the carb in different holes would that change anything. I runs fine otherwise and will run all day long with the choke closed slightly.

Anything else I should look at?

  • I suggest trying some Seafoam in the gas. I use a combo of Seafoam and Lucas injector cleaner to keep my carb clean.

Huh? :h Assuming the OP's genset is a synchronous model and not an inverter model which does vary speed according to load then it should run at a constant speed of 3600 rpm ... after all, that's how a synchronous genset derives it's 60 Hz frequency, unlike an inverter model in which the inverter itself creates that 60 Hz signal regardless of engine speed. If this is indeed a synchronous genset that is varying in speed then it needs servicing.
  • I'm thinking you still have something in the carb. I have had to clean a couple of small engines several time before I finally got it right.

  • Matt,

I'll try lubing all the linkages. I've had the carb apart a number of times and soaked in carb cleaner, cleaned all the passages and blown them out with air.

  • Have you cleaned and lubricated, if needed, the linkages between the carb and the governor? Friction in that mechanism could lead to hunting, particularly under light load.
  • Yes, I understand that. When I turn the choke all the way off the rpm's fluctuate up and down quickly.
