Generator not starting on Natural Gas

I have a gasoline generator converted to run on NG. The problem is that i can't get it started on NG.

The only solution i have found is to start it on Gasoline, then turn the fuel knob off and let it run for 2-3 minutes until the carb is completely dry. At this moment, I try to start it on NG and it starts successfully.

Bottom line, it only starts on NG when the engine is hot. What is wrong here and How can i start on NG without using gasoline every time?

Thanks in advance for help.

  • I have a Yamaha 2800 watt tri-fuel generator. My operator's manual states that ALL gasoline must be out of the carburetor before it will run on LP. Correct me if I am wrong, but I think you stated that when you start it on gas and then shut off the gas supply until the carburetor runs dry, then unit will start and run on LP. If and when I run my unit on gas, I always run the carburetor dry and I have never had a problem of starting the unit on LP. Hope this helps. Let us know how you make out.

Was the generator set up for propane or NG.. There is a metering jet or oriface, (What it is called depends on it's use) that is different for these two applications. They are NOT interchangeable.
  • I sometimes run my eu2000i on propane. Maybe that behaves different than NG, maybe not. I've found that it's really easy to over-do the priming and it takes a bunch of starter pulls to clear the situation. Make sure the choke is off. Once I learned to use only a quick blip on the primer the starting is pretty reliable.
  • Two things:

    1. Gotta get rid of the air in the NG line. Might need to prime several times.

    2. The fuel/air mix needs to be rather high (adj screw on the NG regulator inlet) for NG compared to propane.

Does your regulator have a primer button? That should get enough natural gas into it for starting.

Yes the primer button pumps the NG directly into the carb and i can hear it but still doesn't start. After the engine is warm (by starting and running it on gasoline for a 2-3 minutes), i prime it for a moment than crank and it starts on NG.

I use Natural Gas and the regulator is a brand new one with no dust and blockage.
