HOnda EU3000is not starting (oil Alert?) bypass??

Well, I just bought a used Honda EU3000is. When bought the seller told me that it has been in storage for 1yr and gas tank is empty. The engine do spin freely and has compression.

Got it home, fill it with fresh gas and change oil and check for sparks = good (orange color) also bought a new spark plug as well (not honda). When try to start it will not starts. So i follow some of the reading, I bought some starting fluid and spray it down the throat of the carb and closed the choke. Still does not start. About every 10-15 start tries an explosion will go off just once.

Open up the carb all I see is gunk, so i clean it with the carb cleaner and reassemble back. Still cannot get it to run, just like before every 10-15 start tries an explosion will go off once.

Measure my oil alert and got its open (1M ohm). Strange when disconnect the connector and try to start the oil alert does not come on (still will not start). But I have not short it yet, it's disconnected but not short. Does that mean I have to reconnected and somehow shorted?

It seems that my oil alert sensor is dead, as is all connected when trying to start I only get spark for about 1s before the red LED oil alert come on and then no more sparks. With the oil alert connector disconnected, no spark at all.

Question: any way to bypass the oil alert sensor? Just disconneting will not do, it seems Honda build in saftey through the oil alert.

Also try shorted (discconnected), still does not start

thanks,

  • Well today after looking at the eletrical diagram, I though it would start. But-nogo. I disconnected the yellow wire on the engine side with the black still connected. Same result ie. get 1s of spark, then no more as oil laert LED flash/blink.

I measue V from the yellow wire connected and disconnected to 12V batt both reading around 0.6V. The yellow wire is not ground for sure, it just floating. When the generator is running, what's voltage reading on the yellow wire??? 12V???

Measure resistance on the engine side to ground = open.

    thanks.
  • Oil is filled to the top and fresh gas. I just found an electrical schematic online. I will do another test to confirm.

With the connector connected, I get 1s of spark and then no more which at the same time the oil alert LED flash/blinks. With the connector disconnected, there NO spark at all.

With the schematic, I noticed that the yelllow wire is for the oil alert and the black wire is the ground for the spark plug. No wonder I get no spark when disconnected the connector, I disconnected the spark plug ground.

I'll try to just disconnect just the yellow(oil alert) on the engine side, not the connector near the batt.
  • I rebuild/clean the whole carb. At first, I though I have sparks but more trouble shooting there was no spark.

I would get spark for 1s or so, then no more with everything connected with the oil alert LED flashing/blinking after the 1s.

NO spark at all if I disconnected the oil alert connector near the batt.

Also, my spark plug is not wet, should it be wet?
  • In the first post you said you have spark. Did you pull the jet in the carb and clean it ? Just cleaning the bowl isnt enough.
  • I am not getting spark, carb has been cleaned. Gas bowl is drained 2x.

If you have a 3000is model, and if you have time can you help confirm. If you disconnected the oil switch connector (near the batt) that you cannot start the generator or confirm NO spark.

    thanks,
  • Did you drain the carb bowl?
I needed to do that once on my 3000. Started immediately once I did that.

If you are getting spark I would think the oil level is not the issue.
  • On the sensor side when when disconnected the connector it read "open" on the side to the LED it read 45k Ohm and climbing.

With the connector connected, the spark will sparks for 1s, then no more that's when the oil alert come on blinking/flashing.

With the connector disconnected, the LED oil alert will not come on and no spark at all. I did change the spark plug, sparking blue.

On the oil switch(sensor) on the engine, do I need to disconnect both yellow and black or just yellow?

As of now I am having no spark issue. Also, when starting does the oil alert come on normal or not normal? If it's normal, I might have to look at the coil.

    thans,
  • Orange spark is not a good spark. Swap for the new plug and check spark again. The oil sensor simply grounds the mag, so open circuiting it will prevent it from being an issue. On a satisfactory level, it's an open, on low level, it'll short.
  • All the ones I worked on. Just unplugged the sensor. Might check the wire going to the sensor. May have a short in it.

If you are ever up this way. Drop it off and I will look at it for you.I have people from Houston bringing things all the time.
