Honda Propane Portable Generator

Anyone have any reviews of this generator? Is it good for boondocking? Price is reasonable.

Honda GC190 3000 watts

  • Propane has its benefits. No stinking gas tanks, it doesn't get old or gum up the carburetors. It has it's downsides but if it is your objective, you can get a decent quieter generator that will run on propane.

We boondock and on the rare occasion we need our generator, it is one like the above mentioned. ( basic unit $300) This is boondocking out in the middle of no where and not just a dry camp ground. There are no neighbors to listen to our generator so the fact that it isn't the quietest isn't a issue.
  • if your boon docking away from others, it might be useable
but that depends on your nearest neighbor

but I would not go propane on a portable generator

if your going to go open frame the Champion model 3500 Category 5 is very popular

  • Hi,

Propane only has 95,000 Btu's per gallon, while gasoline is 115,000 Btu's per gallon, so already you will be consuming more fuel each hour than a gasoline generator. Also it is more difficult to refill a propane tank than a gas tank. The gas tank, you can use a portable fuel tank, or take it to almost any gas station and refill a tank in about 2 minutes. It takes more time to pay for it than fill it. Even if you are using pay at the pump with a credit card.

Propane you have to go to a particular station or propane sales place, then fill it, then go to pay for it. Many times I am stuck out by the propane filler waiting on a clerk to fill my tank, so I have to wait several times. It might take 15 minutes to fill a tank.

Try this website. Most like the 2000 watt Honda's and use two of them to pair up and power a 30 amp RV, and they are easy to lift at only about 47 pounds each.

Mayberrys.com You have to call them to get the correct price, as Honda will fine their vendors who publish a price under the MSRP on the internet.

    Fred.
  • Costco has a Yamaha powered 2000 generator for $599.99 click

    Might be a better option.
  • Clicky

To me, it doesn't look practical for boondocking.

And, like ScottG said, it will probably be loud.
  • Propane is very fuel inefficient and could be difficult to find when boonndocking
