Hondo 2000 vs Yamaha 2000

For same price - Yamaha 2000 is one inch shorter, two pounds lighter, and .8 DB quieter. Honda at 98cc, Yamaha at 79cc.

So, why does everyone seem inclined to buy the Honda, way more comments and campers talk about Honda than a Yamaha.

I'm betting the quality is probably pretty equal - so, can anyone say why it seems more RV'ers buy the Honda.

Just curious about reasons one over the other -- don't particularly want to get into a big extended brand war, but my curiosity is sticking itself out there again.

Is availability a likely issue? Or ease of finding Honda dealer for service and repair and warranty?

  • I sell Yamaha at work and I owned the 3000 and 2400 watt units. Loved them both.

The one big selling point when I show a customer the Yamaha is that you can shut off the gas valve and let the gen run until the carb runs out of gas. The electric on/off switch is independant of the gas valve.

On the Honda, the electrical on/ off switch is incorporated into the gas valve knob so when you turn off a Honda, fuel remains in the carb bowl.
Nice to be able to drain the carb bowl.

Please tell me that's when you first add gas after its being dry.
  • The Yamaha has less cc's too, but shows same outputs ?? Maybe a little higher RPM ?-- but is also quieter ...

I like the 'easier start' (heard that from a number of places) and the 10 hrs on a tank vs 8 hours ...

leaning toward the Yamaha at this time ...

The only thing this will be used for is charging TC batteries - and also computers and ISP connections.

we don't use hair dryer, MW, TV, or any appliances - just the batteries and electronics.

SO, if I plug this Yamaha/Honda into my surge protector, and charge the electronic stuff, is that the best way ... I have a "Cyber Power" surge protector with built-in reserve battery as well. SO, thought I would plug it into the generator 20 amp plug and charge it direct, and the LT and Hotspot as well.

I'd not run the electronics off the generator, just charge.

We can usually go three / four days on one Gr29 battery when no HU camping - and we're power-misers ... and bed early, up early. SO, less power use.

I'd think an hour each day after overnight use - lights, mostly and the CPU items, and hour with the 2000i should do it - so, that's ten days boon-docking with only one tank of fuel. Sounds fine to me ... :)
  • Each Yamaha has the ability to parallel with another Yami. With the Honda, you have to buy one with the parallel stuff and then buy a slave. You could buy the parallel kit for the Honda if you want.

I also think the Yami "sounds" quieter than the Honda.

X2 and for the record I have two Honda 2,000's. :C

  • I know a lot of people with generators and only one is a Honda and it's not a portable one. So everyone doesn't have one.
  • Someone posted a comparison they did a couple of years ago and the Honda had better surge capacity. I myself often run it for short periods well in excess of its ratings and it doesn't give any indication that it's laboring.
I think people buy the Honda because it's legendary.
If I had it to do over again I would get the Yamaha because my Honda has always been a pig to start. Even new it took 18 pulls to start it.
