How Best To Charge My Battery

I have a single group 27 battery.
I have a Honda eu1000i generator.
My trailer came with a parallax 7155 converter.
I want to upgrade to a Progressive Dynamics PD9260CV converter.

Will making that upgrade be a more efficient way to charge my single battery? Or is the parallax 7155 good enough? Or option #3, would it be quicker/more efficient to hook the generator directly to the battery?

Early next year, i plan on doing a lot of boondocking.

Thanks for your help.

Regards,
Michelle

Get a PD 9245, and you will love it. It would be plenty big for even 2 27s, and it won't overload your Honda, and you will have manual control over the charging stages, should the need ever arise.

    Best answer.
You cannot run the 9260 with your 1000 watt Honda. Get the 9245.

There is no real benefit to replace the converter when only charging one battery. The money would be much better spent on a second battery. After you have 2, 3, or 4 batteries then you can think about replacing the converter.

OP HERE: I have weight issues and can't afford any more than the 1 battery. That's another reason I didn't want to have to bring along my stand-alone car/4-wheeler/lawn beast battery charger - it's heavy!

  • After fighting to get it to do a decent job for a couple years, I threw my portable Schmacher "smart" charger in the trash after cutting the cords off of it. Many of these expensive chargers do a great job separating people from their money, but little else. My 25 year old 10/30/50 charger does a lot better job, and a lot quicker too.

  • ARE THERE ANY so-called smart chargers around that are plug-and-play? Ones a person doesn't have to play mind games with in order to get a decently full charge? Mind games including clicking switches fooling temperature compensation or needing 600 hours to fully charge a battery so that OEM specific gravity appears before the battery sulfates?

Charging by generator I will be damned if I can come across anything as simple and as thorough as a decent size charger connected to a six-hour spring wound Intermatic Timer. At home a demented smart charger has enough IQ to maintain a decent charge for awhile.
  • Single battery? I would get a 30 amp IOTA over the 60 amp PD.

You will only get about 40 amps into the battery from a 1000va generator. PD might work fine as it will be limited with one battery. PD-60 does have the potential to overload the Honda. Consider a PD9140 with wizard pendent.

The 7155 works fine because of the single battery and lower fixed voltage. You will never see 55a out of it. It is about voltage not the amp rating. 13.6v is slow, 14.4/14.6 volts from the PD or IOTA is fast.

"best" of course would be 100 to 150 watts of solar :B
  • The genset to the battery is usually the worst option. My group 27s need a little higher voltage to get them charged quickly than my other batteries, for some reason.

The good news is the paralax is 55 amps. The bad news is it looks like it is 13.6-13.8v which will not get you recharged quickly at all.

Might be cheaper to get a great portable battery charger to use with the genset.

The PD will charge a lot faster than the Paralax, especially with the charge wizard.
