How to connect Klein ET180 to SIT 610-AC3 water heater?

Hi everyone 👋

I have a Sun Valley Roadrunner 162 (2005 or so) and I have a water heater problem (SW6p).

Every few minutes/hours the main gas valve opens and a strong gust of gas is killing the pilot light as the pressure is too strong.

I bought the Klein tools ET180 to measure the gas pressure.

The problem: I'm not sure how to connect the ET180 to measure the gas pressure. Do I need a special adapter or something?

Thank you so much! 🤩

  • Only reducing the pressure (counterclockwise) on the SIT 610-AC3 helped resolve the issue.

From what I can tell, reducing the pressure with the adjuster causes the propane to be released more gradually and slowly.

Problem fix. This is how I did it:

    Thanks anyhow!

should have posted a video of the flame to start with haha.  It still doesn't look like a good hard flame, it should be all blue with little wisps of yellow on the fringe.  maybe a tiny bit more yellow when the doors open, but when closed you should see the slightest amount of yellow on the tips, if your door has a sight glass.

I didn't do a very good job with the video, I agree. Sorry about that.

The main thing that I wanted to show in the video is what screw you should play with the adjust the flow to the main burner.

I released the screw all the way (to reduce the pressure), and then had to turn it back in a little bit (as the pressure was too low).

In the video description there's a link to 2 more videos that show how I measured the pressure and the flame after I finished.

Obviously those are educational videos and not the official way to do it. I'm not an expert of course.

Thanks everyone for your help with this!

  • the only thing you can do with that aside from the pilot tube assembly and burners would be to replace the main gas valve.  that the part that you push the button to light it and adjust the temp on.  ya its a bit expensive but to me that's where all signs are pointing if you already replaced the pilot assembly and it is positioned right

  • Thank you so much for your help everyone!

Grit_dog, I'll try to replace the gas regulator and let you know.

I have also tried the furnace and the furnace works well.

  • Did you check to see if it’s doing the same thing on the other gas appliances?

  • It’s great you’re trying to diagnose the issue, but save your $ and return the pressure meter.
The gas pressure is regulated at the regulator by the tanks.
if in fact it is an excessive pressure issue, the regulator is the problem. The water heater/stove/furnace etc just take what the regulator gives them.
Regulator is cheap and easy to replace.
IMO worth just replacing it even if you later find out the water heater has a different problem. They’re like $20-30 only.
    good luck!

  • I second what Grit says above.
But to answer your question in order to use the Klein you would need to be able to hook it up to the gas system. So yes you will have to go get some vinyl tubing and some small hose clamps and possibly some brass connectors from Home depot to link the Klein to the gas line.

The problem was not resolved by replacing the propane regulator and not by replacing the pilot light.

I'll try to measure the gas pressure and update about the findings.

      Thanks!
