  • I recently purchased a 2018 Ford C-Max which is towable 4 down and does have an AC outlet. I was wondering why one would need that, now I know.
  • Engine still burns hydrocarbons or is it dehydrated cow farts?

What gets me is the extreme absence of intelligence when it comes to alternatives. Intermediate steps that will work NOW. How can these @#$%&! hypocrites bounce up in down with joy at the thought of CLEAN AIR (!) in 2045 while the other side of their mouth is screeching

"WE ARE OUT OF TIME! NOW!"

Take a look at propane or butane. The absence of sulfur (acid rain) the dramatic reduction in hydrocarbons, CO and CO2.

Then government ignores these RIGHT NOW tangible steps and taxes the living snot out out of liquid petroleum gas for public use, spends hundreds of millions of dollars on buses that use natural gas.

    Talk about hypocrisy.

    Talk about manipulation.

A Most overwhelming majority like 97% of LPG of USA LPG is exported to the far east and Japan. I dove past a liquefied natural gas port on Mexico's west coast yesterday that is shipping a hundred thousand tons of natural gas USA gas, to China PER WEEK. The cost is one eleventh the price of nationally distributed gas in the USA. Proven reserves of natural gas in the USA is 11,000 years.

I saw twenty six 11,000 gallon tankers of LPG butane waiting to enter Mexico yesterday at Otay Mesa. The highly taxed gas sold here costs HALF THAT of gas in the USA.

    Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa..................!

$1300 for a 3kw of power plus $15K for the Prius that only has a 150AH battery at 12V.....yes 6.5A at 200-250V. Engine will have to run most of the time. For $1300 I can buy a 6KW generator and syphon the gas out of my Prius.

Not using the 12v battery, you could just connect a regular inverter and not buy that set up

That system connects to the EV battery system
Engine is off until the battery reaches a certain discharge point then cycles on and off like when driving
  • The extremely wealthy method of camping...

"Do you go camping perhaps in a huge diesel pusher?"

"No, I have people that do that for me"
  • Chevy had this years ago. I think it was around 2002 or so. They offered a hybrid Silverado 1500 that could be used as a generator too. It had 120v outlets. It was aimed at construction trades who would need a lot of job site power. I guess nobody wanted one. I'm in the construction business and I only ever knew one guy who had one. They quit making them after just a few years.
I'd be curious what these kits do to the warranty on the car.

Isn't that what a generator does? :@ Seems to me that idea did "take off" pretty well. ;)
  • You will see that is a very old article. "Making your own electricity" with an internal combustion engine is a losing proposition. You quickly find out how inefficient they are (why that idea never took off). The idea does have merit if you could use the battery power when not able to plug in and recharge when you could. Workhorse is supposedly getting ready to market a extended range electric pickup truck with 120VAC outlets. If that were towable, it would probably be a viable candidate for a power-supplying toad. They do seem to be having trouble delivering on the promise, though.
  • 8.8kw-h battery pack...let's say 7kw-h usable.

Air/Con and a few other minor loads...around 1.4kw, so about 5hr before the battery pack is dead. Assuming it's not too hot out and the air/con cycles...might be good for 10hr which is a viable number for overnight use.

    A few questions:
    - For frequent use, how much does an extra cycle wear on the batteries?
    - How much fuel does the engine use while charging with a 3.3kw charger driven by a 68kw gas engine?
    - Does the Prius start the engine at night with no on around if the batteries get low? Are there safety concerns if it does?

Not knocking the idea. If you have a PEV, it makes sense just curious about the complications and unexpected costs.
  • i like that idea, if i had a hybrid vehicle, i would be investigating that option
