I need more room for batteries.

I found this ad on craigslist for 12 1 year old Trojan T 105 6v batteries. click

Neat bank but I don't have enough room or solar and I don't think the trailers converter would be up to charging them right.

Wouldn't mind splitting them up with other Metro area members.

  • Too bad I just bought GC2s from Sam's.

I'd be a little cautious - might be worth load testing those batteries. If the boss gave up on solar after one year (judging by the interconnection wires - he doesn't know how to make solar work). Chances are, those batteries have been chronically under-charged for the whole year.

Everything i do with my bank of 4 batteries uses 4AWG cables. Does ok... Now I am down to three 12V Batteries so its even better I guess...

Measuring right at the battery terminals I see 52-53 AMPS DC current using my PD9260C 60 Amp controller.

I really probably should run a 2AWG cable on my setup if I eventually go with the 80AMP Converter/charger setup.

I think 2AWG is as big as I can go with my 8-ton hand crimper tool I use here.

  • Is it just Denver or does Jim have a nose for this like a bird dog? :BNice find, Jim!
  • One thing I've learned with bigger banks is either you have to have a lot of punch or a lot of time to get them back up from 50%. My converter is junk and I'd hate to have to use it with these. My solar controller is 3 stage but I don't have enough panel. I'm not sure you can overload a alternator but can you over heat it from running it under heavy load for too long?

You have to plan for around 20AMPS of DC Charge current if you want to charge up a 12V Deep Cycle battery to its 90% charge state in a three hour time period.

You can have less DC current available but then it will take longer to charge up the batteries.

I'll take four of your battery find.

I always thought I would find a GULF CART Battery supplier and start going through their pull outs for the gulf carts. My family at LAKEWOOD SC always gets their 6 to 8 Gulf Cart batteries changed out almost every year. You know there has to be some excellent T105's in that pile of returned batteries.

This thread kind of raises a question with me......Be it 6 or 12 volt batteries, how would it affect the converters ability to charge multiple batteries?
Also, since the tow vehicle's or motor home's engine also charges the house batteries, would having multiple house batteries overload the tow vehicle's alternator?
  • I could do four. It works out to $62.50 a battery and I'm sure there's room for negotiations.
  • I'd take two as my current 6 volts are getting a bit old.
