Ice Maker

I took my motorhome to Coulee RV in West Salem Wisconsin for de-winterizing. They also did the winterizing. While they did the de-winterizing they siad the waterline to the Ice Maker was cracked. So they remove the refrigeraror to replace the line. Next they told the ice maker was not working and that had to be replaced. So after $700.00 plus they told it was fixed. We are heading to Texas so I was checking over the motorhome didn't check the ice make because they told me they had checked it. I'm here in Texas and the ice maker doesn't work. I remove the outside cover and see a red wire cut a taped from a temp sensor and a white wire cut tape coming fron the water solinode. I found the old wire harness that they cut when they remove the unit and it show the red and white wire connected,,,can I just connect the two wires? We have a New Dimensions Dometic refer.

Thanks for any help. No ice in Texas is rough.
Happy Camping, bye Dennis

Ouch...$700! If it's any consolation, it might have been worth it, at least if it had actually worked when they were done. Firstly, there was a generation of these things where all the lines 'turned to dust' after just a couple of years. Mine did, so decided to repair it myself. The only way to do this on my rig was to remove the fridge. Who knew these things weighed 220#! :E My brother and co-worker on this project has never forgiven me and swears his back will never be the same!

Not sure about the cut wires, but could indeed be from the heat tape on the line that they didn't replace. If there are still electrical connections to the actual valve, that is probably the case.

I think probably that stoopid ice-maker caused me more problems over 12 years than anything else on the rig! Aggravating...but then again, happy hour without ice is just not happy hour!

    Cheers,
    tfw
  • That sounds like the leads to the heat wrap on the ice maker line. If they didn't install a new line with the heater on it, the wires will do nothing.
  • Yes the water valve is turned on, there is no power to the solonode. I can see how the waterline to the ice maker can crack. I have red wire taped up and a white wire taped up, I can see that red and white were connected. I was told that was for the waterline heater for cold weather use. I can't find a wiring diagram.

Thanks for the input, bye Dennis
  • Based on your write up, I have no idea about the wiring. Are you sure the water valve to the ice maker is turned on?
  • We don't use our icemaker - have it shut off. They eventually leak - both in your home or rv. Just don't want to take the chance in the rv after having to repair a floor in the house from one leaking that we never knew about. Never any water so we knew it was leaking. Found out when we moved the frig to clean back there. No thanks - I'll use ice cube trays.

Even if it is properly winterized that water line is the crackingest thing I'v ever seen..

I fixed mine and improved the operation of the ice maker big time, I now get (if I wish) Way more ice, where before I kept running out.

I removed it and put in a pair of Rubbermaid Ice Cube trays. (I can put 4 of them in there if I need serious ice and dump them in the ice maker's bucket so I can fill it in about a day. And still use ice as I do it.)
  • If it's obvious that you are holding the two sides of a cut wire, then yes just connect them together. Make sure you match the colors, red to red and white to white.
