Inverter Power or Juicer Issues...

My wife has a Juicer that was sometimes take camping, it's has a simple low-off-high switch and a 850W motor, and runs fine off the Honda 2000 Generator and shore power.

My mom has the same juicer and it wouldn't run on my dad's Honda 3000 or Honda 5500 generators so he installed a Xantrex 1500w inverter and it works flawlessly. Still don't know why it wouldn't run on either of those, only the 3000 is inverter power.

This week I tried running our juicer off of our inverter, same model Xantrex 1500w that my dad has. It only works on the outlet closest to the inline transfer relay/inverter. On any of the other 110V outlets it just buzzes when you turn the switch on (and there is no amp draw). If I hook up shore power the juicer works flawless off any of the 110V outlets, so I don't think I have a wiring issue. There are 2 15A circuits, it doesn't work on either.

The inverter hasn't gone to sleep mode with the low draw becuase the TV still has power.

Why would the inverter only be able to power the juicer on 1 outlet?

  • Yes it's a MSW, for what I use it on the cost isn't worth a PSW. It would be 2x as much for similar ratings.

I am also not sure it's a waveform issue as the same model juicer won't start on my dad's EU3000is which has PSW output and the 5500 isn't inverter style.

If it was a waveform issue why does it start on one outlet and not another on the same circuit? We are only taking 15' of 14ga away at most.
  • My only thought is that having a low power device connected may have changed the waveform enough to start the motor. MSW inverter right? MSW is hit and miss with motors and electronics. If you can return it for PSW I think you will have better luck.
  • Speaking of coffee grinders I went out to the camper this morning to grind some coffee (forgot to last night and didn't want to wake the kids so I decided to use the TT inverter).

Anyhow it had no issues running the 140w coffee grinder, so I plugged the juicer in and it started without issues. This is the same outlet that it just buzzed on last night. So now I am really confused.

I have verified that the hot/neutral are on the correct side. Ground is not used with the juicer.

What I really don't understand is why it worked on one outlet of inverter power, but none of the others yesterday.

I had a similar problem with a Mr Coffee bean grinder.

We normally use the Cuisinart DB600 Coffee Grind and Brew setup which works great with shore power and running off the 2KW Generator when not on shore power and just re-charging batteries in the mornings. This grinds and make fresh coffee in just five minutes and pours up in a thermos carafe. This keeps the coffee hot all day long.

My backup coffee maker when camping off the power grid is a COLEMAN Peculator which will make our favorite fresh ground bean coffee from the propane stove top but of course you need to grind the beans first. Always using the same bottled water insures you come with the same favorite coffee taste.

The Mr Coffee bean grinder is not a high wattage unit but I could not get it work from a 150WATT MSW Inverter every time. It was right on the edge of turning on the grinding motor but most of the time it would just HUM. I too went with a larger Inverter being a 300WATT MSW and had the same problem. Then I tried a 300WATT PSW Inverter and it would work every time. I tried it on a 150WATT PSW Inverter and it worked every time. Seems it wanted to see a PURE SINE WAVE type Inverter to operate the 120VAC grinder motor.

Today I run my emergency power station with a 600WATT PSW Inverter for the Home Entertainment items, cell phone and computer chargers, fans, electric lap blanket, WX Radio setup etc and all works fine. My 600WATT PSW Inverter is installed close to the battery terminals and I run long HD 120VAC extension cord cables with multihead receptacles on the ends from the two 120VAC Inverter outlets. One cable goes to the Home entertainment area and the other cable goes to the bedroom night table area. All cords are out of sight running along the floor and walls using Wiremode cordmate II cable management kits from LOWES.

The PURE SINE WAVE Inverter setup was the fix for me...
