Is naphtha really needed for removing Proflex?

Need to do a bit of recaulking and have not done it before. Internet says to soften it with naphtha (aka white gas) first and then wipe it off with mineral spirits. The owner of the local RV repair shop says he just uses mineral spirits to soften it up then scrapes it off with a plastic scraper.

Tried 3 places yesterday and nobody had naphtha but that was before I realized it was just white gas as used in camping stoves. Before I head off to find some, is it really needed or helpful?
  • Snabble gronk gribble...

I wish it was available down here. The shop with my lights is out of gas for their torch...
  • I found a 32 oz. bottle of Coleman camping fuel at a store that sells camping supplies. It's 100 percent naphtha. The small containers of lighter fluid cost too much for the amount you get, but I have no idea how much naphtha is needed during a recaulking project.

That's what I thought at first and started out a Benjamin Moore store. The owner there is extremely knowledgeable about paints and related products but had no idea where to get it. :(

Napththa IS what "Coleman" campstove fuel is, should be very easy to find at any Walmart or any place that sells outdoor camping stuff like campstoves and Coleman lanterns..

Pure Naphtha IS not "lighter fluid" but lighter fluid MAY have SOME Naphtha in it PLUS other ingredients..

Naphtha in it's pure form is oil free and evaporates almost immediately leaving no oil or other chemicals behind, nor does it go bad or get stale..

Some antique engine owners swear by using Naphtha (AKA Coleman fuel) over todays Ethanol laced gas..
  • Online inventory shows my local orange bigbox store has 6 gallons of VM&P Naphtha in stock.

Unless you live in a state where it is regulated for some reason. I'm in NY and we're supposedly second worst behind CA, and naphtha is easy to get.

Bought a quart size can at ACE hdwre.
  • So, which is best 3m adhesive remover, or naphtha followed by mineral spirits. I did not know about either being used in this application, and had a terrible time removing the Proflex.
