leak at outlet of black tank

I have a leak at the outlet fitting of the black tank. I can see only one way to get at it and that is thru the outside utility compartment. It appears that if I remove the panel there that has the dump valves, outside shower, etc. and then remove the outlet pipe from the black tank to the dump valves it might be possible to reach the outlet fitting at the black tank. Cannot get at this fitting from below or above. Does anyone have any experience at doing this? It appears that there may be a rubber "boot" at the outlet end of the tank that connects a short stub of a pipe that is connected to the black tank to the downstream pipe that leads to the dump valve. My rv is a 2005 Itasca Suncruiser model 37J. Any help would be appreciated.

  • A big thank you. We far to seldom hear of solutions after advice is given.
  • Here is what I found out. There is a rubber boot at the outlet end of the black tank that connects the stub from the tank to the 1st downstream piece of pipe leading to the dump valve. This boot is designed to have both the stub and the pipe inserted into the boot about 1 inch. Only one side was connected properly. The end of the downstream pipe was only inserted into the boot only 1/8th of an inch. This was evident by the crud that was on the inside of the boot. Looks like this probably was like this from the factory, because this whole downstream pipe connection to the dump valve is quite rigid and there is no play in it.
  • I have found Winnebago Customer Service to be very helpful - 1-800-537-1885.

Stating the obvious, do a through clean and flush of the black tank and position the RV so that anything left in the tank is tipped away from the tank outlet before removing the coupling.

I believe the flexible coupling is called a Fernco fitting.
