NO DEISEL IN GAS CAN?

Is color coding fuel containers, or at east clearly labeling them, important? Well, we have a vacant lot not far from our Adirondack cottage where a beautiful log cabin used to be. The owner had filled a blue "Kerosene" labeled fuel can with gasoline for his generator, but failed to tell his wife about it when he left on a hunting trip. Unknowing, she used the can to refill their Kero Sun space heater on a chilly night, lit the still kerosene soaked wick and went to bed. She got away with relatively minor burns by going out a window, but the cabin and contents were a total loss. Even her car was destroyed as it sat next to the cabin. She spent the night with us after the EMT's treated her, and we took her to her sister's the next day. Her husband didn't know anything had happened until he returned a week later...

if you put diesel in a gas can and then forget what you have in it and be silly enough to put it into your car you may also be silly enough to think you could sue the gas station to cover your mistake. just be thankful he did you a BIG favor

I think that they should get the color of pump nozzles standardized before worrying about our gas cans.

It seems like that I've seen posted, when pumping gas into your vehicle at a gas station you are to remain within sight of the pump nozzle. Yet you see people washing their windows, and when it's cold out getting back inside their vehicle.

No it's not good enough, we know about the $#@!^% EPA sabotage of fuel container spouts and some have easily found ways around those nanny state regs. As for "PFCs typically are color-coded for various fuels:", typically does not a regulation make. It would say "MUST" or "IS REQUIRED" or possibly the infamous "WILL", not typically which just implies a preference.

I have waded thru many thousands of pages of EPA verbiage over the years.

Portable fuel containers, commonly known as gas cans, are designed and manufactured under strict specifications set by the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The current EPA requirements have been in effect since 2009 and include design features that minimize air pollution and improve safety.
What Are the New Regulations?
The current EPA regulations are based on requirements started in California by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) in 2000 and were updated in 2007. At that time, regulation of PFC design and manufacture was controlled by individual states, but that changed with the current EPA standards. As of January 1, 2009, all new PFCs produced and sold in the United States must be compliant with the EPA regulations.

The regulations require:

A single, self-venting opening for filling and pouring with no separate vents or openings.
A permeation-resistant container that permits no more than 0.3 grams per gallon per day of hydrocarbon emissions.
Automatic closure, such as a nozzle that automatically springs to the closed position when the user is not pouring from the container
Childproof features as outlined by the Children’s Gasoline Burn Prevention Act

What Is a Portable Fuel Container?
A portable fuel container (PFC) is a receptacle specifically designed to hold small amounts of liquid fuel. The containers can range in size from 1 quart to 5 gallons or more. They are commonly used by homeowners to store fuel for lawn mowers, snow blowers, and other small-engine equipment. The EPA estimates that there are about 80 million PFCs in use in the United States.


PFCs typically are color-coded for various fuels:

Red containers are intended for gasoline and other highly flammable liquids.
Blue containers are used for storing kerosene.
Yellow containers are used for diesel fuel.
Green containers typically are designed for storing oil.

Laws be as they may, I clearly see the danger in putting gas in a yellow diesel can. But diesel in a red can, no danger to life or limb. Possibly damaging to equipment, but not dangerous. I accept responsibility for damage to my equipment using my fuel can. Anyone using my fuel can without my direction are on their own.

That applies to gasoline only. You can pump your own diesel in OR. In fact, one place I was in last week posted a sign that if you wanted diesel then you had to pump it, they would not. Which was fine with me as I am used to pumping my own fuel. The hitch in the giddy up was only the attendant could operate the pump control system (i.e. run credit card, etc). Getting him to come over and do his portion took forever. My role was limited to squeezing the handle on the dispenser.

I still maintain that their rule was the source of the issue. Poorly trained, or mis-trained, or over diligent, attendant.

Diesel is flammable. Gasoline is EXPLOSIVE
