Possibly stupid, but should not be illegal. I can easily see how in Oregon it could be illegal, since the fuel is being dispensed by an attendant, and since the attendant is an employee of the fuel station, it could create liability issues for the station.
But in the vast majority of states, you pump it yourself into your own can. Pumping fuel into unapproved containers can create a safety and environmental hazard, but pumping one type of fuel into approved containers of different colors creates risk only to yourself and your equipment, which I am fine with. A little Darwinism is seldom a bad thing.
