NO DEISEL IN GAS CAN?

There were ASTM standards (F852 & F926 I think) covering gasoline, diesel, and kerosene portable container standards, including colors, but they were voluntary for manufacturers and were withdrawn in 2017 for updating. At this point, the colors are an informal industry standard rather than a legal requirement. Recognize that state laws can differ and "approved container" regulations can cover a lot of ground.

That applies to gasoline only. You can pump your own diesel in OR. In fact, one place I was in last week posted a sign that if you wanted diesel then you had to pump it, they would not. Which was fine with me as I am used to pumping my own fuel. The hitch in the giddy up was only the attendant could operate the pump control system (i.e. run credit card, etc). Getting him to come over and do his portion took forever. My role was limited to squeezing the handle on the dispenser.

MSA is very strict and overbearing and they don't require any special colors for fuel storage cans. One would think if there was a special color for a diesel fuel storage can it would be in the MSA verbiage.

I did some looking around and found that the only websites pushing yellow diesel cans were the ones selling yellow diesel cans. I found no federal regs, OSHA, etc that specified a color for a diesel can. The feds only say an approved container with the contents clearly stated on the outside of the can.

Around here (Michigan, Ohio, Indiana) you can put it in any container you want to including empty plastic milk jugs. Up to the end use to differentiate between what is in the container. Called being responsible for....

Possibly stupid, but should not be illegal. I can easily see how in Oregon it could be illegal, since the fuel is being dispensed by an attendant, and since the attendant is an employee of the fuel station, it could create liability issues for the station.
But in the vast majority of states, you pump it yourself into your own can. Pumping fuel into unapproved containers can create a safety and environmental hazard, but pumping one type of fuel into approved containers of different colors creates risk only to yourself and your equipment, which I am fine with. A little Darwinism is seldom a bad thing.
