Norcold Error L1 OP after install Amish Cooling Unit

Per a prior post, I bit the bullet and ordered a new Amish cooling unit for my Norcold 1210. It arrive Thurs and I spent yesterday and today taking off the old and installing the new. The fridge is now sitting in the middle of the 5th wheel on a platform I built to help get it out. I connected the 12v and the 120v lines to see if it worked before I put it back in its space. I did not connect the LP lines or connections yet, if that matters. I also ordred new fans and thermo switch which I installed ( now comes with some tyoe of relay which is wired in the system, and I am pretty sure I got that right)

I made a 12v jumper/extension to run to the wires from the unit to where they are in the fridge space, ran an extension cord to the outlet for the 120, and turned on the unit, expecting to see rapid cooling per all the rave reviews for the Amish cooling unit. Set it to run on electric only. But, got the error message flashing L1 OP. I did a reset thru the eyebrow and got the same message again.

Did I do something wrong? Does it have to be set back in place with the gas lines and wires hooked up as well? Pretty sure the 12v and 120 lines were put back in the right spots.

Anyone ran into this? Got any ideas? Help!

Thanks

  • FIXED (I think) - this morning, I ran several more google searches AND re-read the install directions that came with the Amish cooling unit. When the Norcold cooling unit was installed I had the recall done and did not re-install that with the new unit. Apparently, with the new Amish units, you have to jump the control box male connections to make it work, where the recall wires had been connected. Made a short jumper and installed it, turned the power back on and the 12v and WOW no error message. Doing a test run now to make sure all is well before I push it back into its space.

NOTE; for those doing the switch out to the Amish units, they do come with instructions, BUT, they are basically the Norcold instructions where the vendor has inserted notes here and there where the Amish install differs from the mfg units,,,,HOWEVER, they used like a size 6 font and I just missed it when putting the wires back on - it clearly states to jump those 2 contact points and that the recall switch box is no longer needed,,,it was just so small type and off to the side that I simply missed it. Perhaps this will help those who make the switch in the future.

Once I have it all back together, I will post pics and little pointers to help others,,,in the meantime, thanks to all those who made comments.
  • When we had that code we put a magnet under the red light on the black box and it reset the box and the unit turned back on. Has now been on for over 1 year without another problem. See my other post on this.
  • I didn' t transfer the recall kit over - it is not required on the amish cooling unit. All I did was run an extension cord for the 120, connected the 120 element leads to the board, and made a 12v jumper to connect to the 12v system. The gas is not connected. There are now 2 unused connections between the 120 element and 12v spades on the board where the recall leads had been attached.

I will run diagnostics and pull codes in the mornng.

Is something supposed ro arrach to the board where the recall kit leads used to be arrached?

    Thanks.

The other posts on the error message was due to the recall kit. I will run diagnostics tommorow
  • It is a recall kit fault code. I will be willing to bet that he is using the RECALL KIT black control and did NOT transfer the Thermo sensor from his old cooling unit to the new Amish unit. So, since he has the Amish, he can do 2 things.
    1. Remove the Black recall box and that will eliminate the code
    2. Get the old Temp sensor off the old cooling unit and install it on the Amish unit and that will remove the Code.
    3. The code is basically saying it is NOT seeing the Ohm reading from the Temp sensor on the burner case. Newer model 1200/1210 series, instead on NO Power on the panel when the recall box trips, the panel gives you the L1 OP code which is the same as looking at the RED LED on the recall box.
    4. If he DID transfer the recall kit and it IS connected correctly, then the recall kit or sensor is bad. There are 2 red wires that come out of the main control that go to the Black recall box on the newer control boards. IF you reverse those 2 wires it will throw that code. If all is connected (recall kit and sensor) reverse those 2 wires at the Black control box. Doug
  • I thought that the L1 OP was the fault - do I need to run thru the diagnostics?

    Thanks
