Onan 4KY

Hello,
I'm still learning this forum while my brain is still trying to figure out my generator problem,So hope I'm posting this properly..I had found generator Jim on an older question is why Im in here he seemed to know this thing pretty well..but any help Im sure would be fine with me..
Anyway I have this thing starting but dying which seems typical for these..Although this one did have mice or rats in it and chewed the fuel solenoid wire..I fixed that and have cleaned the carb because the plunger was also hanging up..it clicks well now, Anyway One question is with me having a volt meter and splicing into the solenoid wire when I start it I see voltage over 12V of course you know I only see this when it runs for it 10 or 20 seconds..runs longer when I hold switch down..so Is this voltage coming from the regulator or battery when it gets to running?..Trying to figure out where its loosing spark or whats causing it..?.So is my regulator ok since the solenoid gets volts when running? I am going to try the volts to the 2 wires to regulator see if it will stay running..So will stand by and await an answer also..
Thank anyone!
Bruce.

I am not familiar with your onan but on my old kohlar it has two boards. The main board and a governor board that controls the rpms. If yours has a mechanical governor like a lawn mower you should only have one board and that is what I would check. Also a failing coil can cause the same symptoms. Flight systems and Parts for Tech have helped me in the past with my generator problems. Call them and they will give you things to check and hopefully help you narrow down your problem.
  • The high failure item I have found on that model. Is the A1 board. It is a two piece control system. Has a DC and an AC side. No AC output will cause a shutdown. I would say 90% of the problems I found was the board. If you go to check the brushes be careful when pulling the flywheel. The key stock to lock the wheel to the shaft. Is about the size of a BB very easy to lose. You should have manual 981-0530 to go by. It has all the test you need to check it out. You don't need the remote hooked up to run it.

Need full model and serial number.

Yes I understand,Sorry..OK It is an Onan microquiet 4000
    Model # 4KYFA-6747K Spek-K SER# A080145605
And also A wiring number which is 0611-1267

I just talked with a tech a little to try and get all the help and knowledge I can and hes saying these mostly need the control board replaced where the regulator is at but have also read where the rotor and or brushes are a good idea to clean and to check the resistance at brushes.., but some difficulty there to get to and clean..But he did say that voltage I'm seeing from the solenoid wire maybe just the battery voltage coming through once its running.
So..Going to school here..lol..Im a lawn mower repair guy these is new territory for me but got to do what I can.
Thanks again!..Hope to hear back from you with any help soon as you can!

    1) Are you running the Genny while plugged into shore power?

    Hello,
I'm guessing I hit the right button here to reply back...So I have down loaded the troubleshoot guide here at the moment I have this whole thing (engine) out and in my shop..Im guessing it does not need to be plugged to the remote to run but really unsure..So even tho the carb solenoid was gummy and hanging up it is good now..but it is still doing what it was doing when in the trailer..Run for a few then die.I have not been able to find a low oil switch on this one I'm guessing it dont have one that it just slings the oil around inside plus I donnt see a oil filter on it.Anyway going to start doing some test here and see what I come up with..
    Thanks!
  • Failed control board can cause that symptom as well. Follow the steps in the troubleshooting guide.
