Onan 5.5 HGJAB Stalls

Why the heck where you down in Mexico this time of year? Mush be getting HOT down that way from the looks of some of the highs in the S.W.

We shagged out of Quartzsite when the temps started hitting 90!

Change the fuel pump yourself. Easy to do. Mine would run like that for a bit then stop. Random. No rhyme or reason.

The saga continues. Had a Tech look at the Onan in Tucson. He was reluctant to change the fuel pump because the dang genset would run forever when he was there and he prides himself on not being a parts swapper. He changed the oil and all filters and checked cooling and it ran fine.

An hour out of Tucson it quit just like before. Same codes. Yesterday I changed the fuel pump and it ran fine. Today we hit the road and it stopped, just like before, after about 30 min.

To recap: has a new carb and has run with it just fine; new air and fuel filters; new fuel pump; full tank of gas and has done the same thing on several different tanks of gas; altitude adjustment is proper.

Ideas?

Thanks! Yes gas. Does NAPA recognize it as an Onan part? Trying to figure out what to ask for. I think it is a fuel issue too...nothing else makes sense.

I got the part number off the old pump and they looked it up from there. It seems it was a fairly common pump.

How old is this 5.5? I had an 2006 and it had an update change to the fuel filter thats just before the carb. It seems those Chinese filters were developing a crack and would either leak fuel and/or suck air. Very dangerous when leaking.

Thanks Chris. I have my manual open and the 3/36 items are different! Appreciate your providing. I'll check some of these when it cools down...around 100 here now! But it strated doing this when it was much cooler.

Thinking back, I believe this started when I adjusted the altitude thingie back to sea level. I'll mess with that for a bit.

C. Try to start genset on shop fuel supply: verify tank level and fuel line condition in vehicle.

A. Verify carburetor altitude setting: readjust as necessary.
B. Verify choke operation, setting, linkage, vacuum pull off assembly and sustain valve: readjust, repair
or replace as necessary.
C. Measure fuel pump pressure/flow: replace fuel filter or fuel pump as necessary.
D. Inspect carburetor butterfly for binding: replace carburetor as necessary.

If it were a gasoline generator and gas engine, I'd probably dump some Berryman's B-12 or another additive in the tank just to see about helping with varnish on the carb.

Thanks! Its gas and the tank is full. The carb is less than a year old because the old one did varnish from lack of use. It has been run a lot since the new one since we're essentially FT'ing and running it all the time when we are moving because it is hot in Mexico now! This just started a week or so ago.
