Onan HDKAJ 7.5 trying to start unattended

I have a 2007 Jayco Seneca with the Onan 7.5 generator. The generator has always worked just fine but recently I discovered it is continually trying to start when just sitting parked. Yes I exercise the genset on a regular basis for the required time. I have tried to stop this by switching the house batteries off and back on--that did not work. This happens frequently and sounds like fuel pump is priming.
Is it possible the main controller is defective? Thanks for any advice.

    Me too.

  • Problem solved!! I had a code 46 which indicates low battery,no power,
corroded cables or other. In my case---I had installed new house batteries and did not realize that when the old batteries went bad that the generator control set a code 46--now I know!! I went online and found someone who advised how to reset and remove the code.
Here is the how to reset and remove the code if you have corrected the problem. Hold the stop button at the generator down for 30 seconds and then run the generator for 15 minutes then shut it down and check for any codes---no more codes!!! Thanks everyone for your input. Hope this helps someone else.
  • Thanks Doug,
I will follow your advise and post back on results.

  • At the genset is the remote harness quick connect. This is external, not inside the genset housing. Take it apart and look at all the pins in both sides. You may find corrosion(rust) and THAT will complete the start ground signal. Usually, front Gensets in Diesels have this problem, not Gensets in the side rear. But, your Genset will get a lot of water thrown at it from the rear tires. Doug
  • Recycle all the controls (shut off manually) every dip switch, click every switch back and forth several times to try and wipe contacts clean. Really cycle those switches like 20 times rapidly. The main power has to be cut when you do this.

Pop a beer, cross your fingers, gaze upward, say "Please" and try to use the generator normally again...
  • Yes, it has a automatic module but it has always been set to manual operation. I have approximately 400 hrs of run time with no problems.
O.K. so the fuel pump is priming it but does not try to start--just continues to prime until I click the switch at the genset and next day it starts all over.
  • You really should utilize a step by step troubleshooting guide for this.

It would be helpful to know if the genset has an automatic operation module or optional exercise module that perhaps has been defeated (until now).

Having the fuel pump energize versus having the engine actually crank over by itself are two different colored horses. Darn near impossible to ESP diagnose your symptoms.
