Outdoor Router

How about using something like a Wi-Fi Ranger... If the RV-port is close enough to your Sticks and Bricks it will connect to the HOuse router, Then it brings the Signal inside the RV and "Re-Routes" it to devices therein.

I actually did this (But with Cat-5 not the Ranger) when I still had a S&B Was the easiest way to get Wi-Fi into the RV
Oh, I ran a Cat-5 to a portal and hookup there with a double female connector. This works if I'm in a place with Wired internet,, or when I hang my Wireless Game Adapter OUTSIDE (Upgrading to a proper outdoor unit later this year). Works great but the 15 year old WGA (linksys WGA-54G) is getting a tad long in the diodes. so I want a new "Wi-Fi Ranger" type outdoor unit.

Thanks, that is exactly what I want to do.

Simply put yes it will work, and the router doesn't need to be outdoor type. I would strongly suggest the tote be opaque as if it is clear the case of your router might melt a bit!! Don't ask how I know (experance is a great teacher). That said the router still works just fine using it now!!

Now to will it work, well hosting at a SP, the Host site about 70' up the hill had working Broadband our site didn't. So I placed my router in a clear tote at their pedestal and the WiFi worked great all the time we were there.
I no longer string cable into the camper, router stays in a tote next to the 5er. It runs our laptops and wireless printer no issues.

The aluminum siding shouldn't be an issue at that close of range. My trailer is aluminum on all four sides and the roof, yet wifi and cell signals make it in.

What's your budget? I recommend an NEMA (ip66 or ip67) enclosure, designed for outdoor installation of IT gear. If you're parked in a southern state, you want one with cooling fans. If you're in a northern state, you'll want cooling plus a heater... the heater isn't meant to keep the electronics warm, it's meant to keep condensation out. You could try skipping the heater and instead use those damp-rid packets from the dollar store, just remember to change them every now and then.

This one is pretty big, 12" x 10" ... smaller ones are a bit less expensive. Sure it's a pricey investment, but so is replacing a fried cable router every few months.

Okay. I'm starting to get it now. You have a couple of options.

Your original plan of putting the cable modem/router outside will work so long as you're not worried about anyone messing with it. I assume the cable modem/router also supplies WiFi. Just mount it where it's high and dry. No need to enclose it. Your signal in the RV will be just fine if you're parked in the car port and the modem/router is mounted somewhere in the vicinity.

If your cable modem/router is not WiFi enabled, then you'll need a separate wireless router or access point. Given the short distance you need to go, just about any inexpensive access point will do. Mount the modem/router where it's high and dry and plug the access point into it.

Simply put, I park under a large carport in a RV park that has no Wi-Fi. I want the convenience and freedom of park Wi-Fi. I currently have a cable modem/router in the trailer and want to move it outside. That is why I wondered about signal strength through a plastic box and aluminum siding.

Nothing wrong with lazy - that's what technology is for.

So is this modem/router connected to a domicile where you could install it indoors? It should be out of the elements. Assuming it is in a home near your port/parking spot, and further assuming that the WiFi does not reach your RV while parked there, then using an extender/access point (AP) is still your best option. Keep the router indoors where it belongs, bring the signal outdoors via some Ethernet CAT5/CAT6 cable.

I want the convenience of leaving the cable modem router safely behind and ready to turn on when I return without having to connect any cables or run them inside the trailer. It will be just like pulling into a park with Wi-Fi in that it will connect automatically. What I do now is disconnect the cable and remove it before leaving. When I return I have to fish it back inside the trailer and connect it to the router. Not a huge deal, but I am lazy.

maybe I'm daft but I don't get what you are trying to do? Are you just trying to connect to your home internet when at home? If so it seems to me there are easier ways than rewiring it each time.

1. go wireless, the video below is just one example of how you could connect it using an antenna and a router inside the camper. You could also use this to connect to wifi at campgrounds.

2. Just run a cat5/6 cable from the house into the camper and add a second router in the camper. You'd just plug the cable into the uplink of the router.

It's about 200 feet away from my aluminum-clad '84 Allegro and I get rock-solid signal from it. I can also remain connected to it on most of my 3.4-acre property which is great when I'm doing yard work. You need to run CAT5/6 cable to it and plug it into your router. It's PoE so it gets its power from a power injector that you install inline with the Ethernet cable. You don't *have* hook it up to your router - it will work as a repeater - but since you have to run Ethernet cable to it anyway for power, you might as well plug it into your router.
