- MEXICOWANDERERExplorerI thought too that I should have stated the pressure was taken at the showerhead. Before 8PM and before 7AM. When I moved in three years ago the shower did not work. The landlord had to tear out the ceramic tile because the ½" pipe was clogged tight with minerals.
The ceiling leaked badly last winter so I am moving in early August. To a nicer place. Bigger, no foot high step to the bathroom 60' from the bedroom. Older houses here had to lift up the toilet to clear the trap. I hope the new place has a concrete roof. This place has a 2x6 ceiling. I can see the roof rafters, the ½" plywood roof that has asphalt sheeting. Mexican houses have zero insulation.
I came up with the perfect comeback to all the negative stuff many decades ago...
"It Builds Character"
Some older houses have a bathroom a drum of water and a cooking pot to flush the toilet and shower with.
But I will not tolerate a roof leaking water. I've been lucky. The bed stays dry but I will not tolerate it wetting the electronics and tools.
I've got intense plans for a second stimulus payment that involves a catalyst heater for the bedroom. The first check went toward a replacement BiPAP. They refused to sell one to me in the USA without a sleep study which have been closed down since April.

Water pressure is six PSI
Holy moley, will it run out of the faucet or drip at that pressure? ;) - MEXICOWANDERERExplorerWater pressure is six PSI
- gotsmartExplorerIt sounds like a water softener should be part of the long-term solution. A water heater may then last many years.
- JaxDadExplorer IIIAre you sure it's brackish and not just highly mineralized?
You're comment about plugging up makes it sound more like deposits and sediment.
Sodium is a solvent, that's why they use a brine rinse to clean a water softeners filter setup.
If it's sedimentation a fairly simple (read cheap & easy) air system and some basic plumbing to a small cheap compressor will do wonders to maintain flow rates. - MEXICOWANDERERExplorerThe Rose bush deaths seem to indicate brackish water.
- wanderingaimlesExplorerYou probably are already doing this, but filtering the water just for the water heater may extend the life considerably. I understand you purchase purified water for drinking and cooking, but maybe some filtration for the heater would help it to last longer.
And what about this wm Me
less than $300 US - MEXICOWANDERERExplorerThanks!
Unless I use a proxy server, walmart switches me to Walmart Mexico. A 30 gallon electric heater down here costs almost $500
People who travel south of Tijuana need recognized ID showing proof of residency so being from Michoacan the Covid checkpoints would refuse me and me to go home.
Half the voltage, half the wattage and at least double the time to heat from ambient. Ambient in the winter can be 40F. Six hours to heat 30 gallons to 120F, which is 80F, Delta T?
These older houses are wired with 12 gauge wire with a single 30A fuse or breaker at the service drop. Wires in houses are encased in concrete.
The Mexicans are unclear on the concept as their LPG heaters are kept outside to ventilate. A 40F environment will empty a 100 lb cylinder in under a month even kept on the lowest setting. In the 70-80F summer the same gas will go 3 months or more. The stupid vent tube running up the middle of the heater is what causes all the loss.
Oh this gets better...
The water here is so bad it kills a rose bush in a week. Purified water for the plants and an instant demand water heater killer. This means bi-weekly blowdowns like firing a boiler.
Home Depot sells 100 gallon set LPG tanks for 500 dollars which trucks can refill or I can hassle the 100 pound cylinders.
An electric heater for showers sounds tempting but the devil is in the details. Like money. And piping that runs through 30 feet of concrete before it gets to the shower is another slow to warm quick to chill is yet another LPG bummer.
Alternatives would be appreciated. I'll check out Home Despot and see If a 12 gallon tank upper temp can reach 160F - Matt_ColieExplorer IIMex,
If scaling up is a big issue, buy a 240V ~4K heater and run it on 120. That will be about a 1kW heater and with the lower heat density, it will take a lot longer to scale up.
Matt - Dave_H_MExplorer III bought mine at Lowes. It is mounted in the crawl space which is a long run from the 30 gal.
