- pnicholsExplorer IIrocmoc,
This whole thread in response to your inquiry could be a bit confusing, so I thought that I'd make sure.
What you bought is NOT a "voltage regulator" device that continues to stay on and continuously provide your RV with the correct voltage without shutting down regardless of the voltage coming in from the outside being a little high or a little low, like can be the case in campgrounds.
What you bought only warns you if the voltage coming in is low or high and then temporarily shuts down power to your RV for a length of time that you set.
A device like the Hughes Autoformer is expensive for a reason. It is the "ultimate" solution for RV power: It keeps you going continuously and automatically - regardless of high or low voltage coming in. It does not shut down you RV's power. - myredracerExplorer IIGood call on the PI.
The PI units are definitely superior - more features, lifetime warranty and it's made in the US of A. If a surge blows up your PI, you can get it replaced. With the "other one", you would have to buy a new one.
Comparison table The warranty shown for the PI units is incorrect and the voltage cutout should be 104V, not 103. - CT_WANDERERExplorer

Have a Progressive EMS unit and wired so even the Generator power has to go through it.
X-2 - rocmocExplorerThanks for the responses. Pushed me to do something so yesterday I purchased this, http://www.campingworld.com/shopping/item/portable-50-amp-surge-protector-with-voltage-protection/56422 .
rocmoc n AZ/Mexico - bshpilotExplorerfor the folks that own both devices - Im wondering what your routine is for connecting....
it would seem that the voltage regulators (autoformer etc) would need to be in like 1st (closest to the pedestal), since the voltage protection devices (like my 50a Progressive Industries EMS-LCHW50) would prevent power from flowing if it were below or above threshold....
BUT i wouldnt want to plug in a voltage regulator before i verified that the wiring & polarity of the pedestal was correct FIRST....since it doesnt seem that the voltage regulators do anything to verify polarity or improper source/pedestal wiring.
do you check the pedestal 1st and then plug in the voltage regulator (auto former) or is it hard wired to be inline 1st & you take the chance ? - pnicholsExplorer IIYou probably should use both: A quality surge protector first and then a Hughes Autoformer plugged into the surge protector. These two in series with each other should protect you from everything.
- AllegroDNomadHughes Autoformer and PI 50Amp. Always.

Do you use a Power Protection Device when you hookup to power (anywhere, not just in a campground)? And what type?
Thanks,

yep... every time i plug in my mh's power cord, it goes through my Surge Guard first. No exceptions.:C

IMO you want more than just a surge protector - you want something thats gonna protect you from bad wiring (open ground, too high or too low voltage and 240v).
yep, get a multi-function surge protector, $250 and up, not the $90 special.
