power window doesnt work

I had a bit of luck with a problem like that yesterday on a Dodge Caravan. On the DodgeTalk forum they said the window motors fail often and Dealers charge $280 to replace them. I took the motor and gearbox out, took the rotor out of the motor and it had good brushes, no burnt wires . . . but the grooves between commutator segments were filled with carbon from the brushes. I cleaned them and the motor worked! No wonder they are all failing - the brushes are too soft for a commutator with groove separations.

Got Window fixed. Took to boby shop close to house. corroded contact.
They cleaned contacts on both windows while at it. Mechanic said they have seen the same problem before with the Fords. Hopefully good to go now for a long time. Thanks for the replys.

checked the fuse today. The manual calls it a circut breaker. Only one for both windows and since driver window works I guess will have to bite the bullet and take panel off.Thanks for the ideas.

I an on my third window regulator on the ten-year old Chev. Taking the door apart is a chore, but replacing the regulator is no big deal.

You have to jamb up the window with some cardboard or whatever to keep it up, then replace new with old. It has a criss-cross set of wires, the motor, and four bolts. Then drop the window in its slots, tighten, and good to go.

Seems way over-complicated instead of a wind up window like the old days.

The fact that both switches fail to activate the window motor suggests the problem is not a switch. After checking the fuses, the next step is to open the door panel and check for a voltage on the motor when the switch is pressed - should tell you whether it is an electrical problem or a motor/mechanical problem.

On my 1989 Ford E350 van I had a periodic problem with the passenger window that would quit working but always in the up or closed position. Tearing apart the door and pulling the motor and window regulator would always seem to make it work again. I could never find any electrical issues with the switches or connections. One day I realized that since the window always failed in the closed position, I checked the window regulator and found that the gear on the motor had run all the way to the end of the gear and was jammed in that position until I either pounded on the door panel or took the motor off of the regulator. Sooo, I figured I'd grind another tooth onto the regulator. No go. Metal was way too hard. Then I decided that the problem had to be that the feltlike window moulding at the top of the window opening was compressed by the force of the window glass and allowing the motor gear to advance too far and jamming the gears.There is no switch to shut off the upward motion of the motor motor Solution? I peeled the top felt moulding down and stuffed a strip of rubber from a heater hose(any material to space out the felt moulding will do) and that was years ago. The window worked perfectly for years after that until I sold the rv.

The power window in my driver's door has been has been driving me nuts for a couple years now. It will quit working a day or two after a "repair." In taking the door apart it will start working. Clean all the connectors and door switch, put it back together, and a day or two later it will quit again. Beating on the door inside and out does no good. I had been cleaning all connections real well and using dielectric compound. This last time I skipped putting the compound back on and it seems to be working now. I go out every day and check it.

In a similar problem. I completely serviced my fridge burner a few months ago and on a short trip the week before Memorial Day it quit working. All I had to do was jiggle a single wire having those push together connectors to get it working again. And that pair had been sprayed with contact cleaner and put back together with dielectric compound on them during the servicing.

Sometimes I guess things just don't want to make good contact.

I had the same problem with my 05 Jamboree. Took it to my mechanic. I told them that it wasn't working passenger side. The mechanic came and asked which one was not working (of course you get there and it's working) He took panels off both doors checked connections and nada nothing wrong. (now of course we go some where and they both will not work)

We opened both doors operating the power windows closed and also slammed the doors while operating them NADA, still work. Go figure?

Another frequent cause - dirty contacts inside the motor rotor. Easiest fix here is to hold the window switch in the up position (we're assuming it's stuck in the down position) as you tap the door panel with a small hammer. Alternately, hold the switch in the up position as you ride over a bumpy road. Both these techniques have been successful in my little shop
