Problems lighting oven pilot

Lighting the oven pilot on our Suburban RV stove has always been a problem in our 2013 Cedar Creek destination trailer. Now we are not able to light it at all. The propane tank ran out and when the new one was hooked up, the oven pilot would not light. Burners are fine. Has anyone else had this issue and how was it resolved?

  • Thanks for your contributions. Our pilot worked once we cleaned it.

Ours is Atwood/Wedgewood but here's what I do:

Set the Oven Knob to a Baking Temperature (like 300), NOT just "Pilot."

Strike Long-Nose BBQ Lighter immediately and move to the Pilot Orifice.

Oven Pilot lights at once in "flare up" mode, meaning a bigger flame than the Standing Pilot flame.

Oven Knob Valve must go to a larger gas flow this way. Makes lighting flawless. I usually do this right when we want to bake, and do NOT leave it in Pilot mode when not in use. Why? At least on ours there is NO thermocouple on the Pilot. If it goes out, that LP will continue to flow. That's also why I wouldn't install a piezo igniter wired to the oven. If it's fired when the oven's full of LP from a blown-out pilot, well, there are pictures above.
  • well.. thanks for that ??
exactly why we want newer, more updated version of appliances.
  • Here is what happens when your stove doesn't work. Turning on the gas and waiting before trying to light it could get you this. Notice there are no burn marks on the rv.

  • the orfice in the pre pilot is so oo small that it takes a long time to get the air out. turn the oven on and open door.wait a couple minutes and then attempt to light it. You should get a very small fire , then a larger pilot and then the main flame. That or the orfice is plugged.and will have to be removed and serviced
  • As "tvman44" suggested--light the stove top burners and let run for a few minutes--than try lighting the oven pilot light. We carry the 8 inch matches just for that purpose. Lars
  • I had a similar problem. After making sure the theromocoupler was good and ther was no air in the gas line, I disassembled the oven valve. Grease is used in these valves during manufacturing and sometimes this white grease can plug gas jets. After cleaning out excess grease and reassembling the pilot and oven lights without problem. This not a hard task, but if you are not comfortable dealing with your propane lines and stove you might want to have a tech service it.
    Hope this helps.
  • Let the top burners burn for a minute or two to make sure all air is out of the lines.
  • Lighting the pilot has always been a problem. There is a heat sensor that has to get hot enough to keep the pilot on and that can take a minute or so. We use a Bic long lighter so we can reach to the back and hold it long enough for it to light.
