Propane Regulator on BBQ

We have a very small boat style 9000 BTU BBQ with our camper.

The regulator seems to be letting total high pressure gas through to the burner, and not reducing the flow. The last time I used it, I had to just barely crack the top of the 5 pound tank otherwise there was way too much flow at any setting from low to high.

I have another regulator off another older BBQ that was probably 12,000 BTU.

The question is, how is the regulator not restricting the flow? Can I just swap out the regulators, or do I need to take a part (maybe a jet or orifice) out of the failed one and put it into the other one?

Are they calibrated in some way to be 9000 BTU and 12000 BTU?

thanks, Mike

  • I've seen unusual pressures on outdoor LP appliances. Manifold pressure and orifice size has to go along with the burner design to get the correct air/fuel ratio. I've worked on several gas appliances that wouldn't burn blue or they didn't have a primary air adjustment and I changed the orifice size and pressure the right amounts (I have charts for that) to give exactly the same btuh input but draw more air and burn right. More max btu capacity out of the reg is fine as long as it's the right min/max pressures to keep the burner heat the same. Best get a replacement from the mfgr. or you could just have more problems. BTW, my Olympia RV grill needs 15" w.c. on high fire to do the job. 10" w.c. won't cook anything. Craig
  • Your regulator has failed, I would stop using it and get it replaced.

Most regulators are preset at the factory to 6 ounces or 10.5 inches water column. The regulator flow setting is affected by hose size, burner size, venturi etc.

Contact the bbq manufacturer and order a replacement.

If you have ever taken a regulator apart (I have, though it was a water pressure regulator, however they work by the same theory) then you know how they can fail.

On the Water pressure regulator I have a spring pushes against a diaphrham, This spring tries to push the valve OPEN.. water pressure on the other side tries to CLOSE the valve, the valve is a common washer type valve on this regulator (May be a needle valve on the propane job, Do not know)

If something jams the seal, or if the seat is nicked, or if the diaphragm membrane is ruptured or any of several other things happen.. It fails.
  • If it were mine I think I'd spend the time to call the manufacturer. I would want to fix the problem fast and correctly.
